Mt. Oasahidake (大朝日岳, 1,871 m), straddling Nishikawa, Oe and Oguni Towns in Yamagata Prefecture, is the principal peak of the Asahi range within Bandai-Asahi National Park — known in Kyūya Fukada’s “100 Famous Mountains of Japan” as “Asahi-dake” (the namesake of the Asahi mountain range).

Called the “Tōhoku Alps”, the Asahi range has the most extensive beech primeval forest in Tōhoku and famed Hime-sayuri lily fields (Lilium rubellum, early–mid July) along the ridge, with 360° panoramic summit views to Mt. Gassan, Mt. Chōkai, the Iide range and the Zaō range. The standard Kodera-kosen course and Asahi-kosen course are advanced ★★★★★ / 18 km / 1,750 m gain / 1-night 2-day plan with Oasahi Hut overnight recommended.

🚨 2026 season: Asahi-kosen access road damaged, only the Niigata side is open: For 2026, the Yamagata-side road to Asahi-kosen is under landslide repair; access is open only from the Niigata side (Asahi-kosen official). The Kodera-kosen course (taxi only, Oe Town side) remains open. Confirm directly with Asahi-kosen ☎0237-67-2860 or Kodera-kosen Choyo-kan ☎0237-67-2226 for the latest.
⚠️ 1-night 2-day required; Oasahi Hut; limited water; bear precautions: The 12-hour, 18 km course is not a day hike; an overnight at Oasahi Hut (below the summit, for-fee, manager resident Jul–Sep) is standard. Water is only at Kingyokusui (5 min from Oasahi Hut) — carry at least 2 L. Asian black bear sightings are common — carry bells and pepper spray. Hime-sayuri lilies (endangered, early–mid July) — strictly do not pick.
