Mt. Hiuchigatake Hiking Routes, Difficulty & Best Season

Mt. Hiuchigatake, at 2,356 m, rises in Oze National Park and is the highest peak in the Tohoku region. Its summit comprises two rocky peaks—Manaita-gura and the highest point, Shibayasu-gura—and it commands a sweeping view over the Ozegahara marsh and Lake Ozenuma.

Main routes

  • Miike → Hirosawa-tashiro → Kumazawa-tashiro → Manaita-gura → Shibayasu-gura (out and back): standard time about 7–8 hours / difficulty intermediate to advanced. The main approach from the north, gaining height past marsh terraces (tashiro) and mountain ponds.
  • Choei-shindo (Lake Ozenuma / Numajiri side) → Manaita-gura: a forested climb from the Ozenuma side, often walked together with a night by the lake.

Difficulty & fitness
A long day with considerable ascent—intermediate to advanced, and demanding good stamina. Keep to the boardwalks to protect the wetlands, and take care on residual snow, which can linger into early July.

Mountain huts
Miike Lodge (at Miike) and the huts around Lake Ozenuma (Ozenuma Hütte, Chozo-goya, etc.) are available.

Best season
July to September is the ideal period; from late September to early October the grasses turn golden (kusa-momiji) across the marshes.

Highlights
The Hirosawa-tashiro and Kumazawa-tashiro marshes, and the grand panorama from the summit over Ozegahara, Lake Ozenuma and the surrounding peaks.
