Mt. Ibuki (伊吹山) is a 1,377m peak straddling Shiga and Gifu Prefectures, the highest peak in Shiga Prefecture. One of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, it is a famous flower mountain where over 1,300 plant species grow wild. The flower fields around the summit in summer are spectacular, and it is also known as the legendary place of Yamato Takeru. The view of Lake Biwa from the mountain is also wonderful.
From Omi-Nagaoka Station or Nagahama Station on the JR Tokaido Main Line, take a bus to the Ibuki Trailhead. To the summit is about 3 hours 30 minutes.

Due to the heavy rain on July 12, 2023, the prefectural road on the Maibara City side (Ueno-guchi, Yataka Trail, Joheiji Trail) collapsed on a large scale, and entry to Mt. Ibuki from the foot is prohibited on all routes (including variation routes and winter climbing). According to the prefecture’s announcement, trail restoration work is expected to be completed around summer of this year, but conservation measures are expected to take approximately 10 years.

Alternative access: via Ibukiyama Driveway
During the driveway operating period (April 18 – November 23, 2026), from the summit parking lot at the driveway terminus, summit-area walking is possible via the West Trail, Central Trail, and East Trail. Toll (round trip) is ¥3,400 for kei/regular cars, ¥2,300 for motorcycles. Section 3 below “Ogaki Station / Sekigahara Station → Mt. Ibuki (summit)” is currently the only public transit access.

The trailhead can be accessed by bus from several stations, and depending on the season, buses also operate to the summit.
