Mt. Tonodake (塔ノ岳) is a 1,491m mountain in the southern part of the Tanzawa Mountains in Kanagawa Prefecture. The summit offers magnificent views of Mt. Fuji and is one of the most popular peaks in this area.
The two main trailheads are Yabitsu Pass (ヤビツ峠) and Okura (大倉). From Yabitsu Pass, the summit is about 4 hours; from Okura, about 3 hours 30 minutes.
The recommended route is to enter from Yabitsu Pass and descend to Okura. This day-trip-friendly route offers easy ridge walking with some chain sections, making it a popular training ground before tackling the Northern Alps. The Okura ridge, nicknamed “Baka-one” (Foolish Ridge), is a long, monotonous uphill and is less recommended for ascent.
While doable as a day trip, Sonbutsu Mountain Lodge (尊仏山荘) at the summit offers accommodation, and the night view of the Kanto Plain from here is spectacular — making an overnight trip worthwhile.
