Mt. To-no-dake (塔ノ岳) is a 1,491m peak located in the southern Tanzawa Mountains of Kanagawa Prefecture. From the Sonbutsu Sanso hut at the summit, you can see Mt. Fuji and Sagami Bay at a glance, making it one of the most popular peaks in the Tanzawa area. Multiple routes can be enjoyed, such as the direct ascent of the Okura Ridge (popularly called “Baka Ridge”) and the traverse of the Omote-One ridge from Yabitsu-toge.
From Shibusawa Station on the Odakyu Line, access Okura by bus, or from Hadano Station access Yabitsu-toge by bus.

The main trailheads to the summit are two: Yabitsu-toge and Okura.
From Yabitsu-toge to the summit is about 4 hours; from Okura to the summit is about 3 hours 30 minutes.

The recommended route enters from Yabitsu-toge and descends to Okura.
You can easily enjoy ridge walking on a day trip, and chain sections etc. are present along the way, so it is also called a gateway before the Northern Alps.

The Okura ridge is popularly called “Baka Ridge”; since plain uphill continues relentlessly, we don’t recommend climbing from this side.
Although within day-trip range, you can also stay at Sonbutsu Sanso at the summit, and since the night view of Kanto from here is splendid, a 1-night/2-day climb is also recommended.

Tonodake Hiking Routes, Difficulty and Best Season

Tonodake is one of the finest viewpoints in the Tanzawa range, and works well for anything from a day hike to an overnight trip. This section sums up the main routes, how demanding they are, and the best time to climb.

Main routes

  • Okura Ridge (the classic): an out-and-back from Okura to the summit of Tonodake. About 14.1 km, roughly 1,185 m of cumulative ascent, and about 8 hours 30 minutes on the trail. The ridge is long and tiring, but the path is a clear, well-marked general trail.
  • Omote Ridge: a traverse from Yabitsu-toge that crosses Ni-no-to and San-no-to on the way to the summit, with excellent views, especially around San-no-to.

Difficulty and stamina: the long ridge takes real stamina, but there are few technical obstacles such as chain sections, and the route is a general trail with boardwalks and steps. Because of the large elevation gain, plan frequent rests and allow plenty of time.

Best season: the mountain can be climbed from spring through autumn, and the clear air of late autumn gives especially fine views of Mount Fuji. In winter, carry light crampons for snow and ice; from early summer into summer, watch out for leeches on the lower slopes.

Highlights: the sweeping view of Mount Fuji, Sagami Bay and the main Tanzawa ridge from the summit, plus the Sonbutsu-sanso hut, where you can stay overnight.
