Mt. Gassan (月山, 1,984 m) rises in the center of Yamagata Prefecture and ranks among the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. It is the principal peak of the Dewa Sanzan (“Three Mountains of Dewa”) with Mt. Haguro and Mt. Yudono. Gassan Shrine, located at the summit, is open to worshippers from July 1 to September 15 (entry fee ¥500). The vast wetland of Midagahara and over 330 species of alpine flora — combined with summer skiing possible until July — make Mt. Gassan a beloved mountain of both flowers and spiritual heritage.
The two principal trailheads are Gassan Hachigome (8th station, Midagahara route) in the northeast and Ubasawa (Lift route) in the west. Reach Gassan Hachigome via a seasonal Shonai Kotsu bus from JR Tsuruoka Station, or reach Ubasawa via Yamako Bus + Nishikawa Town Bus transfer from JR Yamagata Station.
