Mt. Azuma (吾妻山, Nishi-Azuma 2,035 m) is a volcanic group straddling Yonezawa in Yamagata Prefecture and Fukushima City in Fukushima Prefecture, comprising the highest peak Nishi-Azuma, the active Issaikyō (1,949 m) on the Fukushima side, the iconic Azuma-kofuji (1,707 m), Higashi-Azuma and more — within Bandai-Asahi National Park, a 100 Famous Mountain of Japan (Kyūya Fukada’s selection).
The highlight is the cobalt-blue Goshiki-numa “Witch’s Eye” crater pond just below Mt. Issaikyō, plus the 30-minute crater rim circuit of Azuma-kofuji. The Bandai-Azuma Skyline reaches Jōdo-daira at 1,580 m by car, making the Mt. Issaikyō round trip accessible (easy ★★★/★★, ~4 hours). Mt. Nishi-Azuma is reached via the Tengendai Ropeway (Yonezawa side) or Grandeco Gondola (Inawashiro side) up to 1,820 / 1,390 m.
