Mt. Aizu-Komagatake (会津駒ヶ岳, 2,133 m) is a peak in Hinoemata Village, Fukushima Prefecture, within Oze National Park, and is counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan.
The summit area features Koma-no-Ōike (Koma Pond) and a sprawling alpine wetland — known as “the Sky Paradise” — full of pond-tarns and seasonal blooms (Hakusan-kozakura, Nikkō-kisuge, chinguruma). A gentle one-hour ridge walk over boardwalks leads to Mt. Chūmon (2,060 m), and the broad ridge-top wetland is unforgettable. Mt. Aizu-Komagatake is one of the Tōhoku region’s premier flower mountains.
The trailhead is at Takisawa (1,090 m, about 30 min on foot from the Komagatake-Tozanguchi bus stop). Access is via the Tobu–Yagan–Aizu Railway lines to Aizu-Tajima Station, then by Aizu Bus.

2. [Outbound] Komagatake-Tozanguchi → Takisawa Trailhead (about 30 min on foot)
From the Komagatake-Tozanguchi bus stop, walk about 30 min (~2 km, gentle uphill paved road) to the Takisawa Trailhead (1,090 m), or drive about 5 min (~20 free parking spaces, fills up quickly). Trail overview, Koma-no-Koya hut, and regulations
Takisawa – Aizu-Komagatake – Chūmon round trip (intermediate, ~7 h 30 min, 12 km, ~1,043 m gain)
From the wooden staircase at Takisawa Trailhead (1,090 m), climb steeply through forest for 1 h 30 min → water source (3 min off-trail downhill, round-trip 6 min) → beech and Erman’s birch forest for 1 h → emerge onto the alpine wetland to Koma-no-Ōike (2,060 m, Koma-no-Koya) → 30 min to the Aizu-Komagatake summit (2,133 m) → 1 h boardwalk ridge walk across alpine wetland to Mt. Chūmon (2,060 m, end of the wetland). Descend by the same route. The summit itself is grassy with limited views; the best panoramas are from the Chūmon ridge.
Takisawa – Aizu-Komagatake out-and-back (beginner – intermediate, ~6 h 30 min, 10 km)
Same as above, but turn back at the Aizu-Komagatake summit without continuing to Mt. Chūmon. Even fit beginners can day-trip this version. The route takes 7-8 hours in the lingering-snow season (May – early June).

Trail conditions, seasons, snow
- Lingering-snow season (May – early June): heavy snow above 1,500 m, especially around Koma-no-Koya. Six-point crampons essential; route-finding requires care (follow red tape).
- Summer best (late June – August): Hakusan-kozakura blooms in early July → Nikkō-kisuge and chinguruma → August’s wetland is a sea of green. The Mt. Chūmon boardwalk ridge is the spectacle.
- Autumn (September – October): peak colors early to mid-October; Koma-no-Koya closes on 31 October.
- Water: there is a water source 1 h 30 min up from Takisawa (6 min round trip off-trail), and another at Koma-no-Koya (free flowing water). Refill at both — carry at least 2 L on hot summer days.
Regulations and trail information
- No private-vehicle regulation. Free parking (about 20 spaces) at Takisawa Trailhead; fills up in summer and on long weekends.
- The trail lies within Oze National Park. Plant collection is prohibited. Stay on the boardwalks across the wetlands (no off-trail walking).
- Bear sightings have been reported, particularly near the water source and the wetland. Carrying a bear bell is recommended.
