Mt. Ōmine
Mt. Ōmine (大峰山 / Sanjō-ga-take, 1,719 m) in Tenkawa, Nara Prefecture, is the spiritual home of Shugendō (Japanese mountain asceticism), opened over 1,300 years ago by the founder En no Gyōja (En no Ozunu) — counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan.
The summit is crowned by Ōminesan-ji Temple (whose main hall is a designated National Important Cultural Property). Along the trail lie famous yamabushi training points — Kanekake Rock, Nishi-no-Nozoki (“Western Peek,” a vertical 70 m cliff used for the famous suspended-rope ritual, one of Japan’s three great ascetic ordeals) — and the mountain serves as the starting point of the UNESCO World Heritage “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range” (Ōmine Okugake-michi).
The trailhead is at Seijō Ōhashi Bridge (about 30 min on foot or 5 min by car from Dorogawa Onsen). To reach Dorogawa, take the Kintetsu Yoshino Line to Shimoichiguchi Station, then transfer to the Nara Kōtsū Dorogawa Line bus.
