Mt. Ōmine (大峰山 / Sanjō-ga-take, 1,719 m) in Tenkawa, Nara Prefecture, is the spiritual home of Shugendō (Japanese mountain asceticism), opened over 1,300 years ago by the founder En no Gyōja (En no Ozunu) — counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan.

The summit is crowned by Ōminesan-ji Temple (whose main hall is a designated National Important Cultural Property). Along the trail lie famous yamabushi training points — Kanekake Rock, Nishi-no-Nozoki (“Western Peek,” a vertical 70 m cliff used for the famous suspended-rope ritual, one of Japan’s three great ascetic ordeals) — and the mountain serves as the starting point of the UNESCO World Heritage “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range” (Ōmine Okugake-michi).

The trailhead is at Seijō Ōhashi Bridge (about 30 min on foot or 5 min by car from Dorogawa Onsen). To reach Dorogawa, take the Kintetsu Yoshino Line to Shimoichiguchi Station, then transfer to the Nara Kōtsū Dorogawa Line bus.

⚠️ Women’s prohibition (nyonin kekkai), still in force: For some 1,300 years Sanjō-ga-take (the main Mt. Ōmine peak) has been a male-only sacred mountain, and women are forbidden to enter beyond the four “women’s-boundary” gates at Seijō Ōhashi, Goban-zeki, Amida-ga-mori, and Ōhashi-jaya. Women hikers can instead climb the neighbouring Mt. Inamura-ga-take (1,726 m, accessible from Hahako-dō trailhead, called “Women’s Ōmine”) or the Kannon-mine Observation Deck (via the Mitarai Gorge).
⚠️ Ōminesan-ji Temple and summit pilgrim lodges opening period: usually 3 May – 23 September. The temple’s main hall opens its main image only during this period, and the five summit lodges (Ryūsen-ji, Tōnan-in, Kizō-in, Sakuramotobō, Chikurin-in) operate within the same window. The trail itself remains passable outside the period, but you cannot resupply water or food on the summit, so a day trip is essential.

Trail overview, Ōminesan-ji Temple, women’s boundary, and regulations

Seijō Ōhashi – Sanjō-ga-take out-and-back (intermediate, ~6 h, 11 km round, ~790 m gain)
Pass through the women’s-boundary gate at Seijō Ōhashi (930 m), and continue past Hahako-dō, Ippon-matsu Tea House, and Dōrotsuji Tea House to the training sites — Okame-ishi, the chained Kanekake Rock (a yamabushi ordeal site), and Nishi-no-Nozoki (a 70 m precipice where novices are dangled head-first, one of the three great Japanese ascetic ordeals) — before reaching Ōminesan-ji Temple (just below the summit) and Sanjō-ga-take (1,719 m). Descend the same way. Kanekake Rock is passable by ordinary hikers and has a bypass route as well.

Seijō Ōhashi – Sanjō-ga-take – Renge-tsuji loop (intermediate – advanced, ~7 h, 12 km, cumulative gain ~1,000 m)
Instead of returning the same way, descend south via Renge-tsuji (the southern women’s-boundary gate) and a rough forest road back to Seijō Ōhashi. The rougher descending track is for experienced hikers.

Mt. Inamura-ga-take (“Women’s Ōmine”, open to women, ~7 h, 10 km round, 1,726 m)
From Hahako-dō, climb Mt. Dainichi and Mt. Inamura-ga-take. Because women cannot climb Sanjō-ga-take, this is offered as the “Women’s Ōmine.” Hahako-dō is about 50 min on foot from the Dorogawa Onsen bus stop.

Ōminesan-ji Temple and summit lodges (2026 season)

  • Ōminesan-ji main hall (Important Cultural Property, World Heritage): main image revealed 3 May – 23 September. The temple is the spiritual heart of Shugendō, enshrining Zaō Gongen.
  • Five summit lodges (Ryūsen-ji, Tōnan-in, Kizō-in, Sakuramotobō, Chikurin-in): open 3 May – 23 September; reservations from one month before; ¥8,000–¥12,000 per night (with 2 meals). General hikers may stay alongside shugendō pilgrim groups.
  • Ryūsen-ji (in Dorogawa Onsen; head temple of the Tōzan school of Shingon Shugendō): ☎0747-64-0001, open year-round, women welcome. Highly recommended for a pre-climb safety prayer. Official site.

The four women’s-boundary gates (still in force)

  • Seijō Ōhashi (western side of the main peak, the main trailhead) — stone marker reading “From here is the women’s boundary”
  • Goban-zeki (north side, on the Yoshino route)
  • Amida-ga-mori (east side, on the Mt. Daifugen route)
  • Ōhashi-jaya (south side of Renge-tsuji)
  • Women are not allowed on Sanjō-ga-take or in Ōminesan-ji Temple. The neighbouring peaks — Mt. Inamura-ga-take (from Hahako-dō) and Mt. Daifugen (from the Wasamatasō trailhead, up to Amida-ga-mori) — are open to women.

Vehicle regulations and trail information

  • No private-vehicle regulation. There is a free parking lot (a few dozen spaces) at Seijō Ōhashi, which fills up in summer and long-weekend periods.
  • The 2017, 2018, and 2023 typhoons damaged and then repaired sections of the trail. Confirm the latest conditions with the Tenkawa Village Tourist Association.
  • The 3 May opening ceremony and the 23 September closing ceremony bring shugendō pilgrim crowds — expect congestion near Seijō Ōhashi.

Recommended plans

  • Day trip — Seijō Ōhashi out-and-back (men only): Osaka-Abenobashi 7:10 → Shimoichiguchi 8:53 → Dorogawa Line 9:20 → Dorogawa Onsen 10:28 → 30-min walk to Seijō Ōhashi 11:00 → Sanjō-ga-take out-and-back (~6 h) → Seijō Ōhashi 17:00 → Dorogawa Onsen 17:30 → last bus 17:58 → Shimoichiguchi 19:08 → Osaka-Abenobashi around 21:00.
  • 2-day pilgrim lodge stay (men only): During the opening period, stay at one of the summit lodges (Ryūsen-ji, etc.) alongside a shugendō group. Includes the early-morning service and (optionally) the Nishi-no-Nozoki ritual. Advance reservation required.
  • Alternative for women: Mt. Inamura-ga-take / Kannon-mine Observation Deck. From Dorogawa Onsen, climb Mt. Inamura-ga-take (“Women’s Ōmine”) or take the Mitarai Gorge route to the Kannon-mine Observation Deck — also doable as a day trip.
