Mt. Karakuni (韓国岳, 1,700 m), straddling Ebino in Miyazaki and Kirishima in Kagoshima, is one of the 300 Famous Japanese Mountains and the highest peak of the Kirishima range.
A huge crater about 900 m across gapes at the summit, and the view takes in the Ebino Plateau, the crater lake of Ōnami-ike and, on a clear day, as far as Sakurajima. The round trip from the Ebino Plateau is a well-maintained beginner route of about 1 hour 30 minutes each way, a good introduction to the Kirishima range. The Ebino Plateau is reached by the Kirishima Renzan loop bus, making this one of the few active volcanoes you can climb in a day by public transport.
The trailhead is the Ebino Plateau (Ebino City; about 1,200 m elevation), starting from the Eco Museum Center car park. Because the direct route up Mt. Iō, which emits volcanic gas, is restricted, you climb Mt. Karakuni from the detour on the south side of the car park. As Mt. Karakuni is an active volcano, which routes are open changes with the eruption-alert level of Mt. Shinmoe and the restricted zone around Mt. Iō; always check the latest information from the JMA and Ebino City before you climb.
As of June 2026, Mt. Shinmoe is at eruption-alert Level 2 (restrictions near the crater) and the Ebino Plateau (Mt. Iō) is at Level 1, so the round trip to Mt. Karakuni from the Ebino Plateau and the loop via Ōnami-ike are open, but the direct climb of Mt. Iō and the traverse from Mt. Karakuni to Mt. Shinmoe are closed. The season is late May to early June for the Miyama-kirishima azaleas and the autumn colours. If you smell volcanic gas, descend promptly.
How to access the trailhead
1. [Outbound] Maruo → Ebino Plateau (trailhead)
The base is Maruo, the central bus stop of the Kirishima Onsen-kyō; from here take the Kirishima Renzan loop bus (Kagoshima Kōtsū) and get off at the Ebino Plateau. Maruo is reached by connecting buses from Kagoshima Airport and Kirishima-Jingū Station, and the one-day “Kirishima Nottari-Oritari My Plan” pass (adult 1,500 yen) covers the connecting lines too. The first bus, Maruo 8:30 → Ebino Plateau 8:56, leaves ample time to climb Mt. Karakuni and catch the last return.
Bus timetable ①: Maruo → Ebino Plateau (Kirishima Renzan loop bus, outbound)
| Maruo dep. | Ebino Plateau arr. |
|---|---|
| 8:30 | 8:56 |
| 10:30 | 10:56 |
| 12:30 | 12:56 |
Getting to Maruo: Maruo is reached by local bus from the Kagoshima Airport and Kirishima-Jingū Station direction (the connection is covered by the one-day My Plan pass). By car: the Ebino Plateau has a paid car park at the Eco Museum Center.

2. [Return] Ebino Plateau (trailhead) → Maruo
After descending, take the Kirishima Renzan loop bus from the Ebino Plateau back to Maruo. Only the 13:00 and 16:00 (last) departures from the Ebino Plateau run directly to Maruo (the connection point for the airport and stations); miss the 16:00 and you are cut off from public transport, so keep ample margin. Even on the crater loop, leave enough time for the last bus.
Bus timetable ②: Ebino Plateau → Maruo (Kirishima Renzan loop bus, return)
| Ebino Plateau dep. | Maruo arr. |
|---|---|
| 13:00 | 14:02 |
| 16:00 | 16:26 |

Route and safety notes
Route: Ebino Plateau → Mt. Iō detour → Mt. Karakuni (and back). About 2.5 km each way, about 500 m of gain, about 1 hour 30 minutes up — a well-maintained beginner route. A loop from the Ōnami-ike trailhead over Ōnami-ike to Mt. Karakuni is also popular, with a fine view of the crater lake.
Access and buses: from Maruo take the Kirishima Renzan loop bus (outbound Maruo 8:30 → Ebino Plateau 8:56). Daily, but may be suspended in winter due to snow; the last direct return to Maruo from the Ebino Plateau is 16:00.
Volcanic restrictions (most important): Mt. Karakuni is an active volcano in the Kirishima range. Which routes are open changes with the alert level of Mt. Shinmoe and the restricted zone around Mt. Iō. The direct climb of Mt. Iō and the Karakuni–Shinmoe traverse are closed. Before climbing, always check the JMA Kirishima volcano information and the Ebino City trail restrictions.
Volcanic gas: toxic volcanic gas is emitted around Mt. Iō. Even outside the restricted zone, retreat at once if you smell gas or feel unwell.
Season and gear: the season is late May to early June for the azaleas and the autumn colours. The summit is windy, so carry rain gear, warm clothing, a headlamp and ample water.
In an emergency: call 110 (police) or 119 (fire/rescue).
