Mt. Kaimon (開聞岳, 924 m) rises from the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and is counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. Its elegant cone, rising directly from the sea, has earned it the affectionate name “Satsuma Fuji”; despite being the lowest (and southernmost) peak on the hyakumeizan list, its perfect form has been celebrated for centuries. The mountain features a distinctive spiral trail that winds around the cone, giving climbers an unusual experience of changing viewpoints while ascending. Open year-round, the summit offers panoramic views of Sakurajima to the east and Yakushima, Tanegashima, and the Tokara Islands to the south on clear days.
JR Kaimon Station on the Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line is just a 20-minute walk from Kaimon Sanroku Fureai Park (the 2nd-station trailhead). Access is entirely by rail — one of the most public-transport-friendly mountains on the hyakumeizan list.
