Mt. Sanjōgatake (山上ヶ岳, 1,719 m) in Tenkawa, Nara, is one of the 300 Famous Japanese Mountains and a sacred centre of Shugendō mountain asceticism in the Ōmine range.
The main hall of Ōminesan-ji temple stands on the summit, and the mountain is known for ascetic training sites such as Kanekake-iwa and the “Nishi-no-nozoki”, as a component of the World Heritage “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range”. By a long-standing religious custom, the Mt. Sanjōgatake area remains closed to women, who may go only as far as the Nyonin-kekkai gate at the Shōjō-ōhashi trailhead. You enter from the Shōjō-ōhashi trailhead via Dorogawa Onsen, reached by Nara Kōtsū bus from Shimoichiguchi Station.
The trailhead is Shōjō-ōhashi (Ōmine-ōhashi; about 900 m elevation), about 1 hour on foot (about 3.5–4 km) along the forest road from the Dorogawa Onsen bus stop. A Nyonin-kekkai (women’s boundary) gate stands at the bridge; beyond it, the Mt. Sanjōgatake side is a sanctuary closed to women. From Shōjō-ōhashi you pass Ipponmatsu and Dōtsuji teahouses and the Otasuke-mizu spring, the chained rock of Kanekake-iwa and the cliff training site “Nishi-no-nozoki”, then the Ōminesan-ji temple and the Ohanabatake flower meadow to the summit — a round trip of about 11 km, about 900 m of gain, around 4 hours 40 minutes, an intermediate route.
Ōminesan-ji is open (worship and lodging) from the gate-opening on about May 3 to the gate-closing on about September 23, which is effectively the climbing season. Take care on the chains and training sites, and carry a bear bell as this is Asian black bear country.

Route and safety notes
Route: Shōjō-ōhashi (Nyonin-kekkai gate) → Ipponmatsu teahouse → Dōtsuji teahouse → Otasuke-mizu → Kanekake-iwa → Nishi-no-nozoki → Ōminesan-ji → Ohanabatake → Mt. Sanjōgatake. A round trip of about 11 km, about 900 m of gain, around 4 hours 40 minutes, an intermediate route.
Access and buses: from Shimoichiguchi Station take the Nara Kōtsū bus to Dorogawa Onsen (outbound Shimoichiguchi Station dep. 09:20 → Dorogawa Onsen arr. 10:28), then about 1 hour on foot or by taxi to the trailhead.
Closed to women: by religious custom the Mt. Sanjōgatake area remains closed to women, who may go only as far as the Nyonin-kekkai gate at Shōjō-ōhashi (Dorogawa Onsen, Ryūsen-ji and the Menfudō limestone cave can be visited by women).
Training sites and difficulties: Kanekake-iwa is a chained rock and “Nishi-no-nozoki” is a cliff training site, so take care on the rocks and chains; the general trail is fairly well maintained.
Season and lodging: Ōminesan-ji is open from about May 3 to September 23. During this period there are mountain lodgings on the summit (men only, by reservation) and inns at Dorogawa Onsen below; outside it the hall, teahouses and lodgings are closed and it becomes a snow-season climb.
Gear and emergencies: carry rain gear, warm clothing, a headlamp, a map/GPS and ample water, and a bear bell as this is bear country. In an emergency call 110 (police) or 119 (fire/rescue).
