Mt. Hakkōda (八甲田山, 1,585 m at Mt. Ōdake) rises in the center of Aomori City and is counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. It is not a single peak but a complex of 18 volcanoes — North and South Hakkōda — centred on Mt. Ōdake. The Hakkōda Ropeway lifts hikers up to 1,300 m on Mt. Tamoyachi, so even beginners can start the walk from the Tamoyachi Highland Wetland. The expansive marsh of Kenashitai with its autumn colours (late September – early October) is one of Japan’s most spectacular sights, and a soak in Sukayu Onsen (the famous “Hiba 1,000-person bath”) at the trailhead-end caps off the day perfectly.

From JR Aomori Station, JR Bus Tōhoku operates the “Mizuumi-gō” (summer) or “Hakkōda-gō” (winter) line bus direct to Hakkōda Ropeway Station and Sukayu Onsen.
