Mt. Takao (高尾山)

Mt. Takao (高尾山 Takao-san) is a 599-meter peak in Hachioji, western Tokyo. Designated a three-star tourist destination by the Michelin Green Guide in 2007, Mt. Takao is one of the most visited mountains in the world, welcoming millions of hikers each year. Thanks to its easy access — just 50 minutes by train from central Tokyo — it is perfect for a half-day excursion.

If your goal is to hike Mt. Takao itself, it is common to walk from Keio Takaosanguchi Station to the summit without using the cable car or lift. Using the cable car shortens the hike to about 50 minutes to the summit, which is convenient if you are heading to the “Ura-Takao” area (Mt. Kagenobu, Mt. Jinba, etc.).

3. Return: Mt. Takao → Takaosanguchi Sta. (Cable Car)

From the summit of Mt. Takao, walk down to Cable Car Takaosan Station and take the cable car down to Kiyotaki Station, then walk to Takaosanguchi Station. Or walk all the way down on foot.
