Mt. Kagenobu

Mt. Kagenobu (景信山) is a 727m peak on the border of Hachioji City in Tokyo and Sagamihara City in Kanagawa Prefecture. Located in the middle of the Oku-Takao ridge from Mt. Takao to Mt. Jinba, the summit teahouse offers views of Lake Sagami and Mt. Fuji. Specialties such as nameko soup and tempura are also popular. The wide summit allows for a relaxed rest.
From Takao Station on the JR Chuo Line / Keio Line, take a bus to the Kobotoke bus stop. Via Kobotoke Pass to the summit is about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Various course settings combining Mt. Takao and Mt. Jinba are possible.

Mt. Kagenobu Hiking Routes, Difficulty & Best Season

Mt. Kagenobu is a 727 m peak straddling the border between Hachioji City in Tokyo and Sagamihara City in Kanagawa, and it is also one of the summits along the Oku-Takao ridge trail linking Mt. Takao and Mt. Jinba. The standard approach is an out-and-back route starting from the Kobotoke bus stop, on a trail that is well marked and easy to follow.

Main routes

• Kobotoke bus stop to Mt. Kagenobu (out and back): distance about 6.8 km / cumulative elevation gain about 488 m / time about 3 hours 15 minutes / difficulty: beginner to intermediate. Take a bus from Takao Station to the Kobotoke bus stop, then walk over the Kobotoke Pass to the summit (727 m, with the trail’s highest point at 721 m) and back. This is the most common route, well maintained and suitable for beginners.
• As part of the Oku-Takao ridge traverse (Mt. Takao – Mt. Shiro – Mt. Kagenobu – Mt. Jinba): Mt. Kagenobu is also a waypoint on the popular ridge traverse from Mt. Takao to Mt. Jinba, and many hikers pass through it as part of that longer walk rather than doing only the out-and-back (distance and time for the full traverse vary with the start and end points, so check official sources for details).

Difficulty and fitness

The out-and-back route from the Kobotoke bus stop is well maintained and manageable even for beginners. At just over 3 hours round trip, it suits a day hike, and you can take a break at the teahouse on the summit along the way.

Best season

The mountain can be hiked year-round, but the fresh greenery of spring and the autumn colours are especially popular. In winter the air is clear, giving especially good views of Mt. Fuji and other distant peaks.

Highlights

The teahouse at the summit serves its well-known nameko mushroom soup and tempura, and the summit offers sweeping views toward Lake Sagami, Mt. Fuji, and central Tokyo. Cherry blossoms in spring are another highlight.
