Mt. Tanzawa

Mt. Tanzawa (丹沢山) is a 1,567m peak on the Tanzawa main ridge in the Tanzawa Mountains, and one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.
Located in the center of Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park, it is popular as a base for traverses to Mt. To-no-dake and Mt. Hiru-ga-take. Many hikers also stay at the “Miyama Sanso” hut at the summit. It is a nature-rich mountain with primeval beech forests still remaining.
Accessible by Yabitsu-toge-bound bus from Hadano Station or by Okura-bound bus from Shibusawa Station.

Fukada Kyuya, author of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, counted the entire surrounding mountain range, including Mt. To-no-dake and Mt. Hiru-ga-take, as one of the 100 Famous Mountains.

As it is located in the center of the Tanzawa Range, the approach distance is long, and a 1-night/2-day trip using a mountain hut is the basic plan.

Access to Mt. Tanzawa is typically via Mt. To-no-dake from the Yabitsu-toge or Okura bus stops.
Another route walks the public road from the Sansaro bus stop at Lake Miyagase to Shiomizu-bashi.

Tanzawasan Hiking Routes, Difficulty and Best Season

Tanzawasan is a 1,567 m peak on the main Tanzawa ridge and one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, lying just beyond Tonodake. A day hike makes for a long outing, so this section sums up the main routes, how demanding they are, and the best time to climb.

Main routes

• Okura Ridge route (the classic): the standard out-and-back from Okura up the Okura Ridge, over Tonodake and on to Tanzawasan. About 20 km, roughly 1,800 m of cumulative ascent and about 9 to 10 hours round trip, so it takes real stamina.
• Omote Ridge route (from Yabitsu Pass): from Yabitsu Pass the trail crosses San-no-to, Gyoja-ga-take and more to reach Tonodake, then traverses to Tanzawasan. There is plenty of up and down and a few chain sections, but the views are excellent.

Difficulty and stamina: it is a general trail, but it is long with a big elevation gain, so it suits fit hikers. A day trip is possible, yet because the route is long, a good option is to stay at the Miyama-sanso hut on the summit and traverse Tonodake–Tanzawasan–Hirugatake. Water is available at Horiyama-no-ie and Hanatate-sanso (for a fee).

Best season: the mountain can be climbed from spring through autumn, and the clear air of late autumn gives especially fine views of Mount Fuji. In winter, carry light crampons for snow and ice; from early summer into summer, watch out for leeches on the lower slopes.

Highlights: the sweeping view of Mount Fuji and Sagami Bay from the main Tanzawa ridge, and the Miyama-sanso hut on the summit where you can stay overnight. The route also passes the Sonbutsu-sanso hut on Tonodake.
