Nikko Shiranesan (日光白根山) is a mountain with an elevation of 2,578m, located on the boundary between Nikko City in Tochigi Prefecture and Tone District in Gunma Prefecture. It is the highest peak in the Kanto region and is also counted as one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan.

There are three starting points for hiking: Yumoto Onsen, Suganuma Trailhead, and Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway. Using the Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway allows for a comparatively easier climb.

To reach these trailheads, you can take a bus from JR Nikko / Tobu Nikko Station, or from Jomo-Kogen / Numata Station areas.

1. [Going] Nikko Sta. → Yumoto Onsen → Suganuma Trailhead → Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway

From JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station, take the Tobu Bus Nikko bound for Yumoto Onsen. At Yumoto Onsen, transfer to the Kan-etsu Kotsu Yumoto Onsen Line (bound for Kamata) to reach Suganuma Trailhead or Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway.

2. [Going] Jomo-Kogen / Numata Sta. → Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway → Suganuma → Yumoto Onsen

From Jomo-Kogen Station or Numata Station, take the Kan-etsu Kotsu Kamata Line (southbound) to Kamata. At Kamata, transfer to the Yumoto Onsen Line (bound for Yumoto Onsen) to reach Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway, Suganuma Trailhead, or Yumoto Onsen.

3. [Return] Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway → Suganuma → Yumoto Onsen → Nikko Sta.

From Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway or Suganuma Trailhead, take the bus bound for Yumoto Onsen. At Yumoto Onsen, transfer to the Tobu Bus Nikko bound for Tobu Nikko Station.

4. [Return] Yumoto Onsen → Suganuma → Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway → Numata / Jomo-Kogen Sta.

From Yumoto Onsen, Suganuma Trailhead, or Nikko Shiranesan Ropeway, take the bus bound for Kamata. At Kamata, transfer to the bus for Numata Station / Jomo-Kogen Station.

Note: Direct services to Jomo-Kogen Station are limited. Depending on the time, there may be a wait at Numata Station (e.g., arr. 12:44 → dep. 14:19). Please check the latest timetable.
