Mt. Asama (浅間山) is a 2,568m active volcano located on the border of Nagano and Gunma Prefectures. One of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains; due to eruptive activity, entry near the summit is restricted, but climbing to the outer-rim peaks Mt. Kurofu and Mt. Maekake can be enjoyed.
From Sakudaira Station on the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen / Koumi Line or Komoro Station, take a bus to Kurumazaka-toge (in front of Takamine Kogen Hotel). Highway buses from Shinjuku are also available.
The trailheads are two: “Mt. Asama Trailhead,” which has Asama Sanso etc. along the course, and “In front of Takamine Kogen Hotel,” which has Takamine Onsen etc.
