Mt. Suwa

Mt. Suwa (諏訪山, 1,549 m) is an isolated peak rising in Ueno Village, Gunma. Set in the deepest part of western Joshu, it stands quietly at the headwaters of the Kanna River, a mountain of old faith. Its sharp profile and quiet forest walking are its charm, and it is one of the 300 Famous Japanese Mountains.
The classic traverse climbs from the “Narahara trailhead” on the north side over the ridge peak of Mt. Mikasa to the summit, then descends to the “Hamadaira trailhead” on the south side and down to the hot-spring “Shioji-no-yu”. By public transport you use the Nihon Chuo Bus “Okutano Line”; the Gakuen-iriguchi stop is nearest for the Narahara side and the Shioji-no-yu stop for the Hamadaira side.

Planning points:
・Buses are very infrequent, so plan around an early service such as the 6:50 from Shinmachi Station (arriving Gakuen-iriguchi 9:16).
・From Gakuen-iriguchi it is about 40–60 minutes on foot along the forest road to the Narahara trailhead (e.g. Gakuen-iriguchi 9:19 → Narahara trailhead 9:57).
・Most return services require a transfer at Manba (the connection times at Manba are shown in each table).
・With rocky sections, steep climbs and a long descent, a headlamp, emergency food and warm clothing are essential.
・After the descent you can bathe at “Shioji-no-yu”.

1. [Outbound] JR Takasaki Line Shinmachi Station → Gakuen-iriguchi (Narahara trailhead)

From JR Takasaki Line Shinmachi Station, take the Nihon Chuo Bus Okutano Line bound for Ueno-mura Fureai-kan and get off at “Gakuen-iriguchi”. From there it is about 40–60 minutes on foot along the forest road to the Narahara trailhead.

Ride time: about 2 hours 20 minutes – 2 hours 40 minutes

2. [Outbound] JR Takasaki Line Shinmachi Station → Shioji-no-yu (Hamadaira trailhead)

To climb from the Hamadaira trailhead, take the Okutano Line bound for Ueno-mura Shioji-no-yu from Shinmachi Station and get off at the terminus, “Shioji-no-yu”. This service runs direct from Shinmachi Station with no transfer.

3. [Return] Gakuen-iriguchi (Narahara trailhead) → JR Takasaki Line Shinmachi Station

From Gakuen-iriguchi take the Nihon Chuo Bus Okutano Line to Shinmachi Station. Only three early services run direct; the others require a transfer at Manba (to a Shinmachi-bound bus on the same Okutano Line).

4. [Return (after the traverse)] Shioji-no-yu (Hamadaira trailhead) → Shinmachi Station

Traverse Mt. Suwa, descend to the Hamadaira trailhead, and from “Shioji-no-yu” take the bus to Shinmachi Station. Only one early service is direct; the others require a transfer at Manba.
