Mt. Suwayama (諏訪山)

Mt. Suwa (諏訪山, 1549m) is an isolated peak in Ueno Village, Gunma Prefecture, deep in the western Joshu region. A mountain of quiet forests and a sacred history, it is listed among the Nihon Sanbyakumeizan. A popular traverse route goes from the Narahara trailhead over Mt. Mikasa to the summit, then descends south to Hamadaira trailhead and the Shioji-no-Yu hot spring.

Access is via the Nihon Chuo Bus Okutano Line from Shimmachi Station (JR Takasaki Line), a ride of about 2.5 hours to the Gakuen-Iriguchi bus stop.

1. Going: Shimmachi Sta. → Gakuen-Iriguchi

From Shimmachi Station on the JR Takasaki Line, take the Nihon Chuo Bus Okutano Line bound for Ueno-mura Fureai-kan and get off at Gakuen-Iriguchi.

Travel time: about 2 hours 30 minutes.
