Mt. Hanamagari (鼻曲山)

Mt. Hanamagari (鼻曲山, 1655m) stands on the border of Gunma and Nagano prefectures. The mountain is named for its profile, which resembles a bent nose. It is listed among the Kanto Hyakumeizan and Gunma Hyakumeizan.

The trailhead at the old Usui Pass (Miharashidai / Kumano Kotai Jinja) can be reached by the seasonal Karuizawa Red Bus. For the Nagahinata trailhead, take the Kusatetsu Kotsu bus from Karuizawa Station North Exit bound for Kusatsu Onsen / Kita-Karuizawa.

1. Going: Karuizawa Sta. → Kumano Kotai Jinja (Red Bus)

Walk about 10 minutes from Karuizawa Station to the Tokyu Harvest Club Kyu-Karuizawa and board the Karuizawa Red Bus. Get off at Miharashidai — Kumano Kotai Jinja is right there.

The Red Bus operates seasonally (late April to late November). Weekday and weekend/holiday schedules differ. Services may be suspended in heavy fog or rain.

Operating period (2025): April 25 – November 30. Weekday service: May 7 – Jul 14, Sep 11 – Nov 30. Weekend/holiday service: Apr 26 – May 6 (Golden Week), Jul 15 – Sep 10, plus weekends Sep 11 – Nov 30.

Note: Some afternoon departures do not stop at the Harvest Club stop. In that case, board from Manpei Hotel or Kanko Kaikan-mae.

2. Going: Karuizawa Sta. → Nagahinata

From Karuizawa Station North Exit, Platform 2, take the Kusatsu Kotsu bus bound for Kusatsu Onsen / Kita-Karuizawa and get off at Nagahinata.

Operating period (summer schedule, 2025): April 20 – October 31. A winter schedule runs from November 1 to late March with different times and fewer services. Not all buses stop at Nagahinata (some terminate at Shiraito-no-Taki or are express services) — check the latest timetable PDF before departure.

3. Return: Nagahinata → Karuizawa Sta.

From the Nagahinata bus stop, take the bus bound for Karuizawa Station and ride to the terminus.
