Mt. Asahidake (朝日岳)

Mt. Asahi (朝日岳, 1945m) straddles Minakami Town in Gunma and Minami-Uonuma City in Niigata. Part of the Tanigawa Mountain Range, it is listed among the Kanto Hyakumeizan, Nihon Sanbyakumeizan, and Gunma Hyakumeizan. The sharp ridgeline and sweeping views are characteristic of the dramatic Tanigawa peaks.

The trailhead at Doaibashi is accessible on foot from JR Doai Station (10 min walk), or by Kan-Etsu Kotsu bus from Minakami Station or Jomo-Kogen Station.

1. Going: Doai Sta. → Doaibashi (on foot)

From JR Joetsu Line Doai Station, Doaibashi is about a 10-minute walk. Note: The “down” platform (toward Nagaoka) requires climbing an extremely long staircase (one of the longest in Japan) to reach the ticket gate — about 10 minutes. To save energy, consider taking the bus from Minakami or Jomo-Kogen Station instead.

2. Going: Minakami Sta. → Doaibashi

From Minakami Station, Platform 3, take the Kan-Etsu Kotsu “Minakami Line” bus bound for Tanigawadake Yoho (formerly Tanigawadake Ropeway) and get off at Doaibashi. Travel time: about 13–22 minutes. Operating period: April 15 – November 20, 2025.

3. Going: Jomo-Kogen Sta. → Doaibashi

From Jomo-Kogen Station, Platform 1, take the bus bound for Minakami Sta. / Tanigawadake Yoho. Transfer at Minakami if needed. Travel time: about 45 minutes. Fare: 1200 yen.

4. Return: Doaibashi → Doai Sta. (on foot)

Doai Station is about a 10-minute walk from Doaibashi bus stop. The “up” platform (toward Minakami) is at ground level, unlike the deep underground down platform.

5. Return: Doaibashi → Minakami Sta.
