Mt. Akaishi (赤石岳) is a 3,121m peak located in the southern Southern Alps, straddling Nagano and Shizuoka Prefectures.
It is the fourth-highest peak in the Southern Alps after Mt. Kita, Mt. Ainodake, and Mt. Warusawa, and is selected as one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains and the New 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.
For Mt. Akaishi, the common route is a loop including Mt. Arakawa from the Sawarajima trailhead.
Although it is a hard-to-access mountain area in the southern Southern Alps, during the season access is possible using the Mainichi Alpen-go (overnight bus), the Southern Alps Hiking Line (Shizutetsu Bus), and the Tokushu Tokai Forest shuttle bus.
