Mt. Hiragatake (ひらがたけ, 2,141m) straddles the border of Uonuma City, Niigata and Minakami Town, Gunma in the Echigo-Sanzan Tadami Quasi-National Park, selected in Kyuya Fukada’s One Hundred Mountains of Japan. A remote peak famed for its vast summit wetlands, scattered tarns and the iconic Tamago-ishi “Egg Stone”, widely regarded as “the toughest day-hike of the Hyakumeizan”.
The flat, plateau-like summit hosting Himenoike Pond, Tamago-ishi, and the summit wetlands gives the mountain its name (“Hira” = flat). The Takanosu course (currently the only realistic route)・Expert ★★★★★・distance ~21 km・elevation gain 1,300 m・action time ~12 hours as a single ultra-long day hike, with no mountain huts or tent sites on the trail.

1. [Outbound] Tokyo / Osaka → Urasa Station (JR Joetsu Shinkansen)
Urasa Station (JR Joetsu Shinkansen) is the gateway for Mt. Hiragatake. From Tokyo Station, take the JR Joetsu Shinkansen Toki approx. 1 hr 20 min・¥7,810 (reserved). From Osaka, via Tokyo, approx. 4 hr 30 min・¥17,000. From overseas, use Niigata Airport (flights from Tokyo / Osaka / Sapporo / Fukuoka), airport limousine bus to Niigata Station ~25 min・¥420, then JR Joetsu Shinkansen to Urasa ~50 min・¥5,720. Reaching Ginzandaira / Takanosu trailhead by public transport alone is effectively impossible (see below); private car or pre-overnight at Ginzandaira / Oyu Onsen + taxi is the standard.

Private car (Kan-Etsu Expressway Uonuma IC → Okutadami Silver Line → Ginzandaira → Route 352, ~1 hr to Takanosu trailhead, parking ~20 spaces / free) or pre-overnight at Ginzandaira / Oyu Onsen + taxi is realistic.
