Mt. Myoko (妙高山, 2,454 m) is a stratovolcano in Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture, known as “Echigo Fuji” for its elegant cone — a 100 Famous Mountain of Japan in Joshinetsu-kogen National Park (Kyūya Fukada’s selection).

It is the central cone of a double-caldera volcano and the principal peak of the Kubiki Sanzan (Myoko, Hiuchi and Yakeyama). The traverse with the adjacent Mt. Hiuchi (2,462 m, also a 100 Famous Mountain) from the Sasagamine trailhead is popular as a 2-day plan. Access comes from three directions — Tsubame Onsen (Sekiyama Station → Keinan Bus), Sasagamine (Myoko-kogen Station → direct bus in summer), and the Akakura Sky Cable. Difficulty: intermediate to advanced ★★★★, ~8 hours.

⚠️ Sasagamine direct bus is summer-only (typically mid-Jul – late Oct); Akakura Sky Cable seasonal: Bus service to Sasagamine runs typically from mid-July (mountain opening) to late October (in 2025: 12 Jul – 26 Oct; confirm 2026), with varying frequency by date. The Akakura Sky Cable also operates only in summer (typically Jul–Oct); the Akakura trail is closed outside the season. The Tsubame Onsen course is accessible year round, though winter requires advanced winter mountaineering. For hut conditions see Yama-to-Keikoku Kōyaike Hut info.
🌋 Active volcano — alert Level 1 (Normal); Tengudō chain section: Mt. Myoko stays at JMA volcanic alert Level 1 (Normal) and remains climbable. However, the Tengudō chain section just below the summit (Tsubame Onsen / Akakura side) is the technical crux — beware of falls. The “Munetsuki-hatchō” steep section on the Tsubame Onsen course demands extra care on descent. Bear sightings; carry bells.
