Mt. Naeba (苗場山, 2,145 m) straddles Yuzawa Town and Tsunan Town in Niigata Prefecture and Sakae Village in Nagano Prefecture, within Joshinetsu-kogen National Park. Famous for the largest high-altitude wetland in Japan on its summit (~4 km², ~800 tarns), it is a 100 Famous Mountain of Japan (Kyūya Fukada’s selection).

The summit is the “Sky Garden“, a vast wetland with skunk cabbage in June, cottongrass and yellow daylily in July, and grass autumn colours in September. The most popular Haraigawa course (Yuzawa side) via Wada-goya hut (5th station) is intermediate ★★★ / ~7 h. The Koakazawa course (Akiyama-gō, Nagano side) offers a shorter approach.

⚠️ No direct bus to Haraigawa trailhead — taxi from Echigo-Yuzawa Station is the realistic option: No route bus reaches the Haraigawa trailhead; the standard access is taxi ~25 min, ~¥4,000 from Echigo-Yuzawa Station. By car, ~18 km / ~30 min from Yuzawa IC on the Kan’etsu Expressway; the Haraigawa parking lot (~150 spaces) is a 30-min walk from the trailhead. The Minami Echigo Kanko Bus to Kagura Mitsumata / Tashiro Station (Yuzawa east exit) is a separate route via the ski resort, used with a ropeway and seasonal.
🌸 Boardwalk-only summit wetland; limited water sources: The summit wetland is fully boardwalked, but stepping off boardwalks into tarns or wetland is strictly forbidden (vegetation preservation). The steep mid-mountain climb is slippery in rain. Water is only near Wada-goya and from summit-wetland tarns (boil) — carry at least 2 L. Bear sightings; carry bells.
