Mt. Hakusan (2,702 m), straddling Ishikawa and Gifu Prefectures, is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains and, together with Mt. Fuji and Mt. Tateyama, one of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains. It is famous for its alpine flora, including many species that carry the “Hakusan” name such as Hakusan-ichige and the black lily (kuroyuri).
From Mattō or Komatsu Station on the JR Hokuriku Line, seasonal summer buses and a shared taxi connect to the Bettōdeai trailhead.

Key access notes for the 2026 season

  • Private-car restriction: The roughly 6 km between Ichinose and Bettōdeai is closed to private cars on designated summer days; you park at Ichinose and transfer to a shuttle bus. The Hakusan Climbing Bus (Mattō service) and the shuttle bus start operating on 4 July 2026, running only on the designated calendar days centred on the restriction days (check the operating days with Kabushiki-gaisha Map or Ishikawa Prefecture).
  • Hirase Trail (Gifu side): Prefectural Road Hakusan-kōen Line may remain closed long-term due to heavy-snow damage. Check the latest status with the Ministry of the Environment and the Hakusan Tourism Association.
