Mt. Kongo (金剛山 Kongo-san) is a 1,125-meter peak straddling the border of Osaka and Nara Prefectures. It includes the highest point in Osaka Prefecture (1,053m) and has been revered as a sacred mountain since ancient times. Mt. Kongo is famous for its “daily climbing” culture — many locals climb it every day as a form of exercise, and the mountain is busy with hikers year-round.

From the bus stop at Kawachinagano Station, take the Nankai Bus bound for “Kongo-san (Fushimi-toge-guchi)” and get off at Kongo Tozanguchi (Chihaya Hondo-guchi).

2. Going: Tondabayashi Sta. → Kongo-san Tozanguchi

To reach Kongo Tozanguchi from Tondabayashi Station, a transfer at Chihayaakasaka-mura-ritsu Chugakko-mae (Chihayaakasaka Junior High School) is required.

Step 1: Take the Nankai Bus from Tondabayashi Station to Chugakko-mae (approx. 24 min)

Step 2: Transfer to the Chihayaakasaka Village Community Bus to Kongo Tozanguchi (approx. 16 min)

Total travel time: Approx. 44 min (including transfer wait)

Fare: 540 yen total (Nankai Bus 330 yen + Village Bus 210 yen)

Kongo Bus ceased operations on December 20, 2023. The replacement Kongo Furusato Bus (4-municipality community bus) requires a transfer to a small bus (Poncho) at Chugakko-mae. IC cards (ICOCA, etc.) are accepted only on the Nankai Bus section. The village bus section is cash only.

3. Going: Tondabayashi Sta. → Katsuragi Tozanguchi → Mizukoshi Pass

⚠ Direct bus discontinued (Dec 20, 2023, due to Kongo Bus shutdown)

Direct buses from Tondabayashi Station to Katsuragi Tozanguchi and Mizukoshi Pass have been discontinued. Currently, take the Kongo Furusato Bus (4-town community bus) to “Higashi-Mikumari” stop, then walk:

  • Higashi-Mikumari → Katsuragi Tozanguchi: about 45 min (uphill)
  • Higashi-Mikumari → Mizukoshi Pass: about 70 min (uphill)

4. Return: Kongo-san Tozanguchi → Kawachinagano Sta.

From the Kongo Tozanguchi (Chihaya Hondo-guchi) bus stop, take the Nankai Bus bound for Kawachinagano Station.

Travel time: 34 min (from Kongo Tozanguchi) / 40 min (from Kongo-san (Fushimi-toge-guchi))

To return from Kongo Tozanguchi to Tondabayashi Station, a transfer at Chugakko-mae is required.

Direct buses from Mizukoshi Pass and Katsuragi Tozanguchi to Tondabayashi Station have been discontinued. After descending, walk to “Higashi-Mikumari” stop and take the Kongo Furusato Bus back to Tondabayashi Station.

  • Mizukoshi Pass → Higashi-Mikumari: about 60 min (downhill)
  • Katsuragi Tozanguchi → Higashi-Mikumari: about 35 min (downhill)
