Mt. Ponpon (ポンポン山)

Mt. Ponpon (ポンポン山, 678.7m) is a well-known peak on the border of Kyoto and Osaka prefectures in the Nishiyama-Hokusetsu area. The grassy summit offers panoramic views over the Osaka Plain and Kyoto cityscape, stretching as far as the Hira and Hiei mountains on clear days. The mountain is said to be named for the hollow “pon-pon” sound the ground makes when stamped upon. It is one of the Kansai Hyakumeizan, and its well-maintained trails and convenient bus access make it popular year-round.

For the approach via Kaminesan-guchi, take the Takatsuki City Bus from JR Takatsuki Station North Exit. The return from Jurin-ji Temple side uses the Hankyu Bus from Haikata bus stop to Hankyu Higashi-Muko Station or JR Mukomachi Station.

1. Going: JR Takatsuki Sta. → Kaminesan-guchi

From JR Takatsuki Station North Exit (also accessible on foot from Hankyu Takatsuki-shi Station), take the Takatsuki City Bus bound for Kami-no-kuchi area (Tanou, Nakahata, Niryo, Sugiu, etc.) and get off at Kaminesan-guchi. Buses bound for Kami-no-kuchi (the terminus just before Kaminesan-guchi) are more frequent, and the walk from there adds only about 15 minutes.

2. Return: Haikata → Hankyu Higashi-Muko Sta. / JR Mukomachi Sta.

From Jurin-ji Temple, walk about 30 minutes to the Haikata bus stop. From here, take the Hankyu Bus to Hankyu Higashi-Muko Station or JR Mukomachi Station.

Operating period: Year-round. Fare: 220 yen. Travel time: about 24 minutes.
