Tenen (also known as the Kamakura Alps) is a ridgeline hiking course running along the northern rim of Kamakura, connecting Kenchoji Temple to Zuisenji Temple via Ohirayama (159m), the highest point in Kamakura City.

There are two main starting points: Kenchoji Temple (accessed by walking from Kita-Kamakura Station) and Zuisenji-guchi (accessed by bus from Kamakura Station to Daitonomiya).

1. Going: Kita-Kamakura Sta. → Kenchoji (Hansobo Entrance)

Walk about 15 minutes from JR Kita-Kamakura Station to Kenchoji Temple. Pay the admission fee (500 yen for adults / 200 yen for children) and walk through the temple grounds to the trailhead at Hansobo.

Note: Kenchoji visiting hours are 8:30–16:30. The temple cannot be passed through outside these hours. For early morning or late afternoon starts, use the Zuisenji-guchi or Imaikedai entrance instead.

2. Going: Kamakura Sta. → Daitonomiya (Zuisenji Entrance)

Take the Keikyu Bus “Kama-20” bound for Daitonomiya from JR Kamakura Station East Exit and get off at Daitonomiya (Kamakura-gu). Walk 10–15 minutes to the Zuisenji-guchi trailhead.
Buses run approximately every 20 minutes during the day (schedules vary by season and day of week).

3. Return: Zuisenji-guchi / Daitonomiya → Kamakura Sta.

Walk: About 35–40 minutes from Zuisenji-guchi to Kamakura Station East Exit.
Bus: Take the Keikyu Bus “Kama-20” from Daitonomiya (Kamakura-gu) to Kamakura Station East Exit. Buses run approximately every 20 minutes during the day.

Practical Tips for Enjoying Tenen

  • Views & Seasons:Katsujodan Viewpoint offers views across Sagami Bay to the Miura Peninsula.Spring foliage (April–May) and autumn leaves (November–December) are highlights.The fall colors around “Zuisenji ~ Lion-dance Valley” are particularly famous(鎌倉観光公式:秋の見どころ)。
  • Supplies & Restrooms:Shops and restrooms on the trail are limited.Use public restrooms at Kenchoji, near Zuisenji, and near Daitaomiya.
    The Tenen teahouse (Tenen Rest House) operates irregularly, soalways carry beverages and snacks.While there are recent reports of reopening, always check local notices or social media for the latest status(例:公園都市サイトの紹介山行記録での再開報告)。
  • Safety & Trail Etiquette:There are slippery clay slopes.After rain, watch for mud and slipping.Be aware of toxic fungi like Hapalopilus rutilans at tree bases and biting midges (Nuka-ka)(市公式の注意喚起参照:市内ハイキングコースの状況)。
  • Temple Viewing:Both Kenchoji and Zuisenji have viewing hours and admission fees.You cannot pass through outside these hours.
