Mt. Hakkai (八海山, 1,778 m) is a cluster of rocky peaks in Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture, and one of the 200 Famous Japanese Mountains.
Together with Mt. Echigo-Koma and Mt. Naka it is counted among the Three Mountains of Echigo, and it has long been revered as a sacred mountain. The highest point is Nyudodake (1,778 m), and a chained rocky ridge called Happo (the Eight Peaks) runs along the crest. Because a ropeway takes you up to the 4th station, reaching the Senbongi hut is relatively easy.
The nearest station is Muikamachi on the JR Joetsu Line. You access the mountain by Minami-Echigo bus and the Hakkaisan Ropeway.

The trailhead is the Hakkaisan Ropeway summit station (4th station, 1,147 m elevation). The route runs summit station → Nyonindo → Yakushidake → Senbongi hut → (Happo) → Nyudodake, about 1 hour 30 minutes from the summit station to the Senbongi hut, and about 5–6 hours round trip to Nyudodake, intermediate-to-advanced. Happo is a steep rocky ridge with a continuous series of chains, so if you are not confident, head to Nyudodake by the bypass trail (Shindo). The Senbongi hut (check its operating period and reservations) stands on the ridge.
The season is June to early November. The area is home to Asian black bears, so take precautions such as a bear bell, and prepare water and food.

How to access the trailheads

  1. [Round trip] Muikamachi Station → Hakkaisan Ropeway summit station (bus + ropeway)

1. [Round trip] Muikamachi Station → Hakkaisan Ropeway summit station (bus + ropeway)

From in front of Muikamachi Station on the JR Joetsu Line, take the Minami-Echigo bus (bound for Hakkaisan Ski Area) and get off at the terminus, Hakkaisan Ski Area (the ropeway base station; about 30 minutes, fare ¥410). From there, ride the Hakkaisan Ropeway up to the summit station (4th station).

In 2026 the ropeway runs April 25 to November 15, from 8:00 to 16:00 (last descent 16:30), every 20 minutes (on the hour, :20 and :40), taking about 5 minutes. The adult round-trip fare is ¥3,000 (April 25–September 30) / ¥3,200 (October 1–November 15).

Note: the direct bus from Muikamachi Station to Hakkaisan Ski Area runs as an extended service from April 25 to September 30. In October–November it may stop short at Yamaguchi, so check operation with Minami-Echigo bus. After descending, return to Muikamachi Station on the same bus line (confirm the departure times from Hakkaisan Ski Area; the last ropeway descent is 16:30). If the timing does not work, you can also take a taxi.

Route and safety notes

Route: ropeway summit station (4th station) → Nyonindo → Yakushidake → Senbongi hut → Happo → Nyudodake. About 5–6 hours of walking round trip, intermediate-to-advanced.

The Happo chains: a difficult path that crosses eight rocky peaks such as Jizodake and Fudodake by chains, with a risk of falling. It is for experienced hikers; if unsure, take the bypass trail (Shindo) from the Senbongi hut to Nyudodake.

Bears: the area is home to Asian black bears. Take precautions such as a bear bell and avoid going alone.

Gear and season: the season is June to early November. Water is scarce, so carry plenty, along with food and rain gear, and submit a climbing plan.

In an emergency: call 110 (police) or 119 (fire/rescue).
