Mt. Yufu (由布岳) is a 1,583m stratovolcano straddling Yufu City and Beppu City in Oita Prefecture, one of the 200 Famous Japanese Mountains and the 100 Famous Kyushu Mountains.
A beautiful twin-peaked mountain (East Peak and West Peak) also called the “Bungo Fuji,” it rises behind Yufuin Onsen. Because Kamenoi Bus runs directly to the Yufu Tozanguchi trailhead from both Beppu and Yufuin stations, it is a popular day-hike.

The trailhead is the Shomen (front) Trailhead, right beside the Yufu Tozanguchi bus stop.
From the front trailhead, via Goyagoe to “Matae” (the saddle between the East and West peaks) takes about 1 hour 50 minutes, and from Matae to the East Peak about another 15 minutes. A round trip takes roughly 4 hours.
*Note: The crater-rim loop (Ohachi-meguri) linking the East and West peaks, and the area around Okuzure, are restricted due to collapse and ground fissures (Beppu City notice updated 1 December 2025; re-checked by us on 2 August 2026). Beyond Matae, use the East Peak side only and do not enter the crater-rim loop. There is a chain section just below the West Peak.
