Takamizu Sanzan (the “Three Peaks of Takamizu”) is a collective name for Takamizuyama (759m), Iwatakeishiyama (793m), and Sogakusan (756m), a trio of low mountains in the Okutama area of Ome City, Tokyo. This popular ridge traverse is easily accessible by train alone from central Tokyo, offering varied scenery including ancient cedar paths, a mountain temple (Jofukuin), bright ridgelines with rocky sub-peaks, and views of the Tama River and Ome townscape.

Route Tips

  • The standard route is Ikusabata → Takamizuyama → Iwatakeishiyama → Sogakusan → Mitake. The ascent follows the pilgrimage path from Kogenji to Jofukuin, Iwatakeishiyama offers panoramic Okutama views, and the descent from Sogakusan has some steep sections.
  • Reverse route (Mitake → Ikusabata): The initial climb to Sogakusan is fairly steep. Morning access is convenient with toilets and shops open near Mitake Station.
  • Summer heat and insects: Even in forest cover, it can be hot and humid. Bring plenty of water, electrolytes, and insect repellent.
  • Hikeable year-round but slippery after rain: Watch for slippery granite sand and wooden steps. Light crampons may be needed in snowy conditions.
