Mt. Hijiri (Hijiridake)

Mt. Hijiri (聖岳, Hijiridake) stands at 3,013m on the border of Shizuoka and Nagano Prefectures in the Southern Japanese Alps. It is one of the most remote peaks among Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, and from its summit you can enjoy sweeping views of the Southern Alps ridgeline.

The most convenient access to Mt. Hijiri is via the Hijiri-sawa Trailhead. Despite the remote location of the southern Southern Alps, seasonal access is available using the Mainichi Alpen-go (overnight bus) and the Tokai Forest shuttle bus. 1. Going: Takebashi Sta. (Tokyo) → Hijiri-sawa Trailhead

Step 1. From Takebashi Station or Hachioji Station in Tokyo, take the Mainichi Alpen-go overnight bus bound for “Hatanagi Dam / Ikawa” and get off at Hatanagi Parking. (Reservation required)

Step 2. At Hatanagi Parking, transfer to the Tokai Forest shuttle bus and get off at Hijiri-sawa Trailhead. (Reservation required)

Tokai Forest Shuttle Bus: Hatanagi Parking → Hijiri-sawa Trailhead

Important: The shuttle bus is exclusively for climbers staying at mountain huts managed by Tokai Forest (Hijiri-daira Hut, Chausu Hut, Yokokubo Lodge, Sawashima Lodge, etc.). Those not staying at these huts cannot use this service.

2. Return: Hijiri-sawa Trailhead → Shinjuku Sta.

Step 1. From Hijiri-sawa Trailhead, take the Tokai Forest shuttle bus to Hatanagi Parking. (Reservation required)

Step 2. From Hatanagi Parking, take the Mainichi Alpen-go bus bound for “Hatanagi Dam → Shinjuku” and ride to the last stop at Shinjuku Station. (Reservation required)
