Kumonodaira (雲ノ平, approx. 2,600m) is a vast lava plateau deep in the heart of the Northern Alps (Kita Alps) in Toyama Prefecture. Often called “Japan’s last unexplored frontier,” it stretches over 250,000 square meters of highland dotted with ponds and featuring distinctively named areas such as Alps Garden and Greece Garden. It is also a treasure trove of alpine flora. Using Kumonodaira-sansō hut as a base, hikers can enjoy a traverse linking Mt. Sofudake, Mt. Suishōdake, and Mt. Washibadake.
The trailhead is Oridachi. Take a bus from Arimine-guchi Station on the Toyama Chiho Railway. The same trailhead is also used for Yakushidake and Washibadake.
