Mount Tara (Taradake, 996 m) sits on the border of Tara Town in Saga and Isahaya City in Nagasaki, and is one of Japan’s 300 Famous Mountains.
A peak of the old conical Tara volcano, long revered as a mountain of Shugendō asceticism, its appeal lies in the Kinsenji temple on the mountain, the stone-step pilgrim path, flowers such as rhododendron and orange surprise-lily, and views over the Ariake Sea. The usual day hike goes from Nakayama Campground via Kinsenji up to the summit and back.
For public-transport access, take a Tara Town bus from JR Tara Station to Nakayama (Nakayama Campground).
The trailhead is Nakayama Campground (Tara Town, Saga), with parking and toilets. The main route is Nakayama Campground → Kinsenji → Mount Tara (996 m) and back, an intermediate route with a standard time of about 3–4 hours. Kinsenji has a mountain hut, the final stretch below the summit has stone steps and chained sections, and the summit gives views of the Ariake Sea and Mount Kyōgatake.
The best season is spring to autumn (April–November); the rhododendrons in spring and the orange surprise-lilies in summer are highlights. Always check the latest bus times and trail conditions before you go.

How to access the trailheads
1. [There & Back] Tara Station ⇄ Nakayama Campground (Tara Town bus & taxi)
Tara Station on the JR Nagasaki Main Line (close to the limited-express stop Hizen-Kashima Station) is your base. From Tara Station take a Tara Town bus or taxi to the Nakayama Campground trailhead.
① Tara Station → Nakayama (Tara Town community bus)
From JR Tara Station take the bus bound for Nakayama and get off at Nakayama; it takes about 20 minutes, and the Nakayama Campground trailhead is right there. As services are few, check the latest times with the Tara Town Tourism Association (0954-67-0065).
② Taxi

③ From Hizen-Kashima Station: from the limited-express stop Hizen-Kashima Station, transfer to Tara Station by JR, or take a taxi directly to Nakayama Campground.

Trail Guide and Safety Notes
Route: Nakayama Campground → Hatchō-dani → Kinsenji → Mount Tara (996 m) and back. The standard time is about 3–4 hours, an intermediate route. Beyond Kinsenji there are stone steps and chained sections with a statue of En-no-Gyōja. A circuit of the Tara range traversing the neighbouring Mount Kyōgatake and Mount Goeshiro is also popular.
Stone steps and chains: the final stretch below the summit has steep stone steps and chained sections that get wet and slippery after rain. Keep three points of contact and climb and descend carefully.
Flowers and seasons: the rhododendrons in spring and the clusters of orange surprise-lily in summer are the highlights, and the summit gives views of the Ariake Sea and Unzen. It can ice over in winter.
Equipment and emergencies: carry rain gear, warm clothing, a headlamp, a map/GPS and plenty of food. In an accident or emergency call 110 (police) or 119 (fire/ambulance).
