Mt. Hyōnosen (氷ノ山, also called Suganosen), 1,510 m, straddles the border between Yabu City in Hyōgo Prefecture and Wakasa Town in Tottori Prefecture, and is one of the 200 Famous Japanese Mountains.
It is the highest peak in Hyōgo Prefecture and the second-highest in the Chūgoku region after Mt. Daisen, and is also listed among the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai, the New Flowers of 100 Mountains, and the 100 First-Order Triangulation Point Mountains.
From JR Yōka Station, take the Zentan Bus “Hachibuse Line” to the Hyōnosen-Hachibuse-guchi stop.

The main trailhead is Fukusada Shinsui Park (approx. 660 m elevation). From the Hyōnosen-Hachibuse-guchi bus stop it is about 1.3 km (roughly a 20-minute walk) along the road to the park, where there is a free car park and toilets.
The Hyōnosen-goe route from Fukusada Shinsui Park passes the Nuno-daki and Fudō-daki waterfalls and the Jizō-dō hall, climbs to the Hyōnosen-goe emergency hut (1,249 m), then follows the ridge to the summit. The ascent takes about 2 hours 55 minutes and the descent about 2 hours 20 minutes, with an elevation gain of roughly 850 m (intermediate level). There is an emergency hut and toilet at the summit, another hut at Hyōnosen-goe, and water sources at Kōbō-no-mizu and Hie-no-mizu along the way.
A loop returning to Fukusada Shinsui Park via the East Ridge totals about 13 km and around 6 hours. The hiking season runs from late April to late November; in winter the mountain is covered in snow and rime ice.

How to access the trailheads

  1. [Outbound] Yōka Station → Hyōnosen-Hachibuse-guchi
  2. [Return] Hyōnosen-Hachibuse-guchi → Yōka Station

1. [Outbound] Yōka Station → Hyōnosen-Hachibuse-guchi

From JR San’in Main Line Yōka Station, take the Zentan Bus “Hachibuse Line” and alight at Hyōnosen-Hachibuse-guchi.
Ride time: approx. 51 min
Fare: approx. ¥990
From the Hyōnosen-Hachibuse-guchi stop, the Fukusada Shinsui Park trailhead is about 1.3 km along the road (roughly a 20-minute walk).
On weekdays, taking the first bus (Yōka Sta. 7:20 → Hachibuse-guchi 8:11) lets you start climbing in the morning and comfortably make a same-day round trip, returning on the 16:40 bus.
※On weekends and holidays there are few buses, and even the first one reaches the trailhead area before noon (arriving Hachibuse-guchi at 11:31). Completing a round trip to the summit and catching the last return bus (departing Hachibuse-guchi at 14:13) on the same day is difficult, so on weekends and holidays we recommend a taxi or staying overnight nearby (see “After the hike & notes” below).
