Mt. Sanbe

Mt. Sanbe (三瓶山) is a 1,126m volcano in Oda City, Shimane Prefecture, one of the 200 Famous Japanese Mountains.
Around the main peak, Osanbe (1,126m), peaks such as Mesanbe, Kosanbe, and Magosanbe enclose a crater basin called Muro-no-uchi; gentle grasslands and wide views are its charm. Part of Daisen-Oki National Park, it can be enjoyed even by beginners, with a sightseeing chairlift available from Higashi-no-hara.
From JR Oda-shi Station, the Iwami Kotsu Bus “Sanbe Line” (bound for the Sanbe Youth Center) reaches Sanbe Onsen, Higashi-no-hara and Kita-no-hara (Sanbe Nature Museum stop).

The shortest route up Osanbe starts from Kita-no-hara (in front of the Sanbe Nature Museum “Sahimel” and the Sanbe Youth Center) via the Himenoga-ike course; from the Himenoga-ike trailhead to the Osanbe summit takes about 1 hour 50 minutes.
From Sanbe Onsen (in front of the Sanbe-so lodge), the Meoto-matsu course first climbs toward Magosanbe; there is no direct path up Osanbe, so you traverse the crater rim via the crater basin (Muro-no-uchi).
From Higashi-no-hara you can ride the chairlift (operating April–November) up to Mt. Ōhira and traverse the crater rim to Osanbe. A circuit including the crater basin (Muro-no-uchi) takes roughly 3–5 hours.
*Note: This is a grassland mountain with good views, but watch for strong winds and sudden weather changes.

From JR Oda-shi Station, take the Iwami Kotsu Bus “Sanbe Line” and get off at Sanbe Onsen.
Travel time: about 43 minutes
Fare: about ¥960
*The ● mark means no service on Sat/Sun/holidays. In winter (Jan 1 – end of Feb) the Sanbe Onsen – Sanbe Youth Center section runs a reduced schedule.

2.[Outbound] Oda-shi Station → Higashi-no-hara & Kita-no-hara (Shizenkan-mae)

From JR Oda-shi Station, take the Iwami Kotsu Bus “Sanbe Line” (bound for the Sanbe Youth Center).
For Higashi-no-hara (chairlift up to Mt. Ōhira), get off after about 50 minutes; fare about ¥1,060.
For the Himenoga-ike course, the shortest way up Osanbe, stay on the same bus past Higashi-no-hara and get off at the Sanbe Nature Museum stop in Kita-no-hara (about 57 minutes from Oda-shi Station). From there it is about 0.3 km (roughly 5 minutes) on foot to the Himenoga-ike trailhead; for the Nago course, ride to the final stop, the Sanbe Youth Center.
*The ● mark means no service on Sat/Sun/holidays. This bus runs only 3 times a day, and the fare beyond Higashi-no-hara to Kita-no-hara should be confirmed.

If you board at Kita-no-hara (Sanbe Nature Museum / Sanbe Youth Center), it is the same bus; it departs the Sanbe Nature Museum stop a few minutes before Higashi-no-hara (check the exact time via the official link below).
