Utsukushigahara (美ヶ原, 2,034 m at Mt. Ōgatō) is a vast lava plateau straddling Matsumoto, Ueda, and Nagawa, Nagano Prefecture, and is counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. The plateau spans 4 km east-west and 2 km north-south — one of Japan’s largest highland tablelands — covered in pasture and grasslands. From the high points of Ōgatō and Ōgahana, on clear days you can enjoy a 360° panorama including the Northern Alps, Yatsugatake, Mt. Fuji, and the Southern Alps. With only about 100 m of elevation gain, it is one of the most beginner- and tourist-friendly hyakumeizan. The Utsukushigahara Open-Air Art Museum (350 outdoor sculptures), the Yamamoto-goya Furusato-kan hut, and the Ōgatō Hotel (perched just below the summit) double as scenic destinations.
From JR Matsumoto Station, seasonal buses operated by Alpico Kotsu (Utsukushigahara Art Museum Line) and the Shinshu Utsukushigahara Plateau Direct Bus reach the trailheads. The Venus Line and forest roads are closed from November to April, so public-transport access is summer-only.
