Mt. Tengudake (天狗岳)

Mt. Tengudake is the principal peak of the North Yatsugatake area, standing on the border of Chino City and Minamisaku District in Nagano Prefecture. The summit is divided into two peaks about 300m apart: West Tengudake (2,645.8m) and East Tengudake (2,640m). The mountain offers a fascinating contrast between the serene landscapes of North Yatsugatake — lava plateaus, moss-covered primeval forests, and pond marshes — and the rugged alpine ridgeline terrain that appears once you reach the ridge. It is popular as a step-up mountain for beginner to intermediate hikers.

The main trailheads are Shibu-no-Yu (Oku-Tateshina Onsen area) on the west side and Inako-yu (Matsubarako Kogen) on the east side. This page provides the latest timetables for public transport access to both trailheads.

1. Going: Chino Sta. → Shibu-no-Yu

From JR Chuo Main Line Chino Station (West Exit, Bus Stop No. 1), take the Alpico Kotsu “Oku-Tateshina Shibu-no-Yu Line” bus to the terminus Shibu-no-Yu.

Fare: 1,150 yen one-way
Travel time: Approx. 57 min
Operating period: Weekends & holidays from August 2 to October 26, 2025; daily service August 2-31 (summer schedule).

2. Going: Koumi Sta. → Inako Tozanguchi → Inako-yu

From JR Koumi Line Koumi Station, take the Koumi Town community bus “Matsubarako Line” to Inako Tozanguchi (nearest stop for Midorigaike trailhead) or Inako-yu.

Operating period: Daily from April 19 to end of November; from December, winter schedule with no service to Inako-yu.

3. Return: Shibu-no-Yu → Chino Sta.
