Mt. Tengu
Mt. Tengu (天狗岳) is a main-class peak in the North Yatsugatake area, rising on the border of Chino City and Minamisaku District in Nagano Prefecture. The summit area is split east-west about 300m apart: West Tengu-dake 2,645.8m, East Tengu-dake 2,640m.
The lava plateau, moss-covered primeval forest, and ponds weave the quiet North Yatsugatake landscape — then, once you climb to the ridge, the scenery suddenly transforms into rocky ridge and scree mountain terrain. This “gap” is the appeal. It is popular as a step-up mountain for beginners to intermediate climbers.
The main trailheads are “Shibu-no-Yu” on the west (Oku-Tateshina Onsenkyo) and “Inago-yu” on the east (Matsubara-ko Kogen).
This page lays out routes to these two trailheads — convenient by public transport — with the latest schedules, along with representative course profiles, walking-time references, and safety information.
