Mt. Buna-ga-take (武奈ヶ岳) is a 1,214m peak in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture — the highest peak of the Hira Mountains. Selected as one of the 200 Famous Japanese Mountains and the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai, the open summit overlooking Lake Biwa is popular for its panorama. The varied climbing offers beech virgin forest and trails along streams.
From Hira Station on the JR Kosei Line, take a bus to Hira Indaniguchi. The Bomura route is accessed by bus from JR Katata Station.
⚠ Hira Climbing Line (Kojak Kotsu Route 130) ended service on March 15, 2025
The local bus “Hira Climbing Line” between JR Hira Station and Hira Indaniguchi was suspended after a landslide in June 2024 and, due to difficulty securing safety, ended service on March 15, 2025. To access via Hira Station, one of the following alternatives is required:
- On foot: Hira Station ⇔ Indaniguchi, about 45 minutes (uphill)
- Taxi: call from in front of Hira Station
- Hira Topia shuttle bus: for guests of Hira Topia Onsen, inquiry required (official access page)
The bus timetables in this article’s “[Going] Hira Station → Hira Indaniguchi” and “[Return] Hira Indaniguchi → Hira Station” sections are no longer valid.
