Mt. Rishiri
Mt. Rishiri (利尻山) is a 1,721m independent volcanic peak rising from Rishiri Island in Hokkaido. Its elegant cone, floating on the sea, has earned it the nickname “Rishiri Fuji”; it is selected as one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, the New 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, and the 100 Flowering Mountains. A treasure trove of alpine flora, its summer flowers and ocean views are unforgettable.
From Wakkanai Port, take the Heartland Ferry to Oshidomari Port (about 1 hour 40 minutes). From Oshidomari Port, access the Hokuroku Yaeijo (North Foothill Campground) trailhead by bus or on foot.
⚠ Important (2026 Season)
- Kutsugata Course closed: The “Sancho-zan – junction with both trails” section above Mt. Sancho (1,461m) remains closed due to collapse (continuing through 2026). Descent via Oshidomari → Kutsugata is not possible; only an out-and-back on the Oshidomari Course is available. Latest information: Rishiripura, Rishirifuji Town.
- Heartland Ferry schedule change from June 1, 2026: The 2026 operating schedule for the Wakkanai–Rishiri (Oshidomari) route has been announced (including boarding-point changes). The timetable below is the 2025 edition — please verify against the official timetable for travel from June 1 onward.
- 2nd-class free-seating fare: ¥3,590 one way (unchanged).
The classic route from Honshu is to take the ferry from Wakkanai Port to Rishiri Island (Oshidomari Port). The Oshidomari Course trailhead is at the 3rd Station Hokuroku Yaeijo, where many climbers base themselves. From Oshidomari Port to Hokuroku Yaeijo is about 55 minutes on foot (about 3.6 km) or about 10 minutes by taxi.
