Mt. Rausu (羅臼岳) is one of the main peaks of the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido (1,661m). In the midst of land designated as a World Natural Heritage, the attraction is being able to walk through dynamic volcanic terrain, alpine plants, and highly primeval forest. Entry is summer-only. The main trailhead is Iwaobetsu Onsen. The key access point is the Utoro Onsen area, and a combination of public transit + taxi is the most realistic.

The closest bus stop to the trailhead is “Iwaobetsu”. However, as the frequency is limited, a plan using a taxi from Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal (advance reservation recommended) is standard. Approximate travel time is about 20 minutes.

If not using a taxi, the closest is Iwaobetsu bus stop in front of Shiretoko Iwaobetsu Youth Hostel; from the bus stop to the trailhead is 3.5 km, about 50 minutes on foot. (Google map)
The trailhead is operated by Hot Spring Inn Chi-no-Hate; if you stay at this inn, conditional shuttle service from Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal can be used.

The Iwaobetsu, Rausu Onsen and Shiretoko-Iozan trailheads , fully closed after a brown bear injured a hiker on 14 August 2025, reopened on 5 July 2026. They were closed again on 9 July after a hiker was chased by a bear, but a field survey found no problem animal and they reopened on 16 July . You can climb now. / From the 2026 season the trails are managed in stages according to bear activity, so they may close again at short notice / You are expected to carry bear spray (rental is available at local facilities). From the “Shari Bus Terminal” in front of JR Shiretoko-Shari Station (about 1 minute walk from the station), board the Shari Bus “Shiretoko Line.” Services going to Iwaobetsu are only 3 morning–noon runs; the rest terminate at Utoro.

From the Chuo Bus Sapporo Terminal located about 15 minutes on foot from Sapporo Station, board the reservation-based highway bus Eagle Liner operated by Hokkaido Chuo Bus and get off at Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal.
From Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal, use a taxi to access the Iwaobetsu Onsen trailhead.
