Mt. Rausudake

Mt. Rausudake is one of the main peaks of the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido (elevation 1,661m). Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mountain offers dynamic volcanic terrain, alpine flora, and pristine primeval forests. The main trailhead is at Iwaobetsu Onsen. The key transit hub is the Utoro Onsen area, and the most practical approach is a combination of public bus and taxi.

1. Going: Shari Sta. → Utoro Onsen BT → Iwaobetsu

From Shari Bus Terminal (approx. 1 min walk from JR Shiretoko-Shari Station), take the Shari Bus “Shiretoko Line.” Only 3 morning/midday buses go all the way to Iwaobetsu; others terminate at Utoro.
Travel time: Shari → Utoro approx. 50 min

2. Going: Memanbetsu Airport → Abashiri Sta. → Utoro Onsen BT

The Shiretoko Airport Liner is a direct bus connecting Memanbetsu Airport, Abashiri Station, and Utoro Onsen. Convenient for smooth travel before and after climbing.

3. Going: Sapporo Sta. → Utoro Onsen BT

From Chuo Bus Sapporo Terminal (approx. 15 min walk from Sapporo Station), take the Hokkaido Chuo Bus “Eagle Liner” (reservation required) overnight bus to Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal. From Utoro Onsen, take a taxi to the Iwaobetsu Onsen trailhead.

4. Return: Iwaobetsu → Utoro Onsen → Shari Sta.

From the Iwaobetsu Onsen trailhead, walk approx. 40 min to the Iwaobetsu bus stop, or take a taxi to Utoro Onsen. Then take the Shari Bus Shiretoko Line to JR Shiretoko-Shari Station.
