Mt. Rausu (羅臼岳) is one of the main peaks of the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido (1,661m). In the midst of land designated as a World Natural Heritage, the attraction is being able to walk through dynamic volcanic terrain, alpine plants, and highly primeval forest. Entry is summer-only. The main trailhead is Iwaobetsu Onsen. The key access point is the Utoro Onsen area, and a combination of public transit + taxi is the most realistic.

⚠⚠ Trailhead closed until July 5, 2026 — entry voluntary restraint requested

Due to a brown bear injury incident on Mt. Rausu on August 14, 2025, the Mt. Rausu Iwaobetsu Trailhead, Rausu Onsen Trailhead, and Shiretoko-Iozan Trailhead have all been fully closed since August 2025. A gate has been installed on the town road leading to the Iwaobetsu Trailhead.

  • Lifting scheduled: Sunday, July 5, 2026 (agreement of Ministry of the Environment, Forestry Agency, Hokkaido, Shari Town, Rausu Town)
  • From the 2026 season, “phased trail management responsive to brown bear behavior” (a restraint/closure judgment system) will be introduced
  • Even after lifting, sudden closures are possible — always confirm official information before departure

The closest bus stop to the trailhead is “Iwaobetsu”. However, as the frequency is limited, a plan using a taxi from Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal (advance reservation recommended) is standard. Approximate travel time is about 20 minutes.

If not using a taxi, the closest is Iwaobetsu bus stop in front of Shiretoko Iwaobetsu Youth Hostel; from the bus stop to the trailhead is 3.5 km, about 50 minutes on foot. (Google map)

The trailhead is operated by Hot Spring Inn Chi-no-Hate; if you stay at this inn, conditional shuttle service from Utoro Onsen Bus Terminal can be used.
