Mt. Ogochi
Mt. Ogochi (小河内岳, 2,802 m), on the border of Nagano and Shizuoka in the Southern Alps, stands on the ridge running south of Sanpuku Pass and is one of the 100 Highest Mountains.
The Ogochi emergency hut sits just below the summit, which commands a sweeping view of Mt. Shiomi, the Arakawa Three Peaks and Mt. Fuji. It is a quiet ridge of flowers and views walked via Mt. Eboshi and Mt. Maeogochi, with few visitors. The usual route is a one-night, two-day trip from the Torikura trailhead, staying at the Sanpukutoge hut and going out-and-back over Mt. Eboshi and Mt. Maeogochi to Mt. Ogochi. By public transport you reach the Torikura trailhead by the summer mountain bus.
The base is the Torikura trailhead (about 1,790 m); it is about 3 hours to Sanpuku Pass (Sanpukutoge hut), and from there about 2 hours 10 minutes over Mt. Eboshi and Mt. Maeogochi to Mt. Ogochi. It is about 5 hours 15 minutes from the Torikura trailhead to Mt. Ogochi, usually as a one-night, two-day trip with a night at the Sanpukutoge hut. From Sanpuku Pass to Mt. Ogochi the ridge is open and above the treeline, with flower meadows and views of Mt. Shiomi and the Arakawa Three Peaks all the way.
Use the Sanpukutoge hut (about 2,580 m, reservations only, booking tel 0265-39-3110 [7:00–17:00 / 19:00–20:00], with a campsite) as a base. Just below the summit is the Ogochi emergency hut, which is staffed during part of the summer season and otherwise left open as an emergency shelter. The season is mid-July to September. The route from Sanpuku Pass toward Mt. Shiomi (via Mt. Hontani and the Shiomi hut) is a separate route, outside the scope of this article.
How to access the trailhead
1. [Round trip] Ina-Oshima Station ⇄ Torikura trailhead (summer mountain bus)
The trailhead, Torikura, is about 1 hour 50 minutes by the Ina Bus “South Alps Mountain Bus, Torikura Line” from Ina-Oshima Station on the JR Iida Line. This bus runs only in the summer climbing season; in 2026 it operates from July 18 (Sat) to August 30 (Sun). Outside the operating period, or before the first bus, you need a taxi from the Ina-Oshima / Matsukawa IC area or a night nearby. From the Torikura gate (car park) below the trailhead, you walk the forest road.
Torikura-line bus: Ina-Oshima Station ⇄ Torikura trailhead (Ina Bus, South Alps Mountain Bus)
| Section | Operating period (2026) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Ina-Oshima Station → Torikura trailhead (outbound) | July 18–August 30 | about 1 h 50 m |
| Torikura trailhead → Ina-Oshima Station (return) | July 18–August 30 | about 1 h 50 m |
Overnight and taxi: outside the bus period (September to June) there is no public transport, so use a taxi from around Ina-Oshima Station (to the Torikura gate) or stay nearby. By car: there is a hikers’ car park at the Torikura gate; when full, you walk from the Koshiji gate. Check the latest service, times and fares with Ina Bus.

Route and safety notes
Route (from the Torikura trailhead via Sanpuku Pass): Torikura trailhead → Toyoguchi col (about 1 h 10 m) → Shiokawa-route junction (about 1 h 20 m) → Sanpuku Pass / Sanpukutoge hut (about 35 m) → Mt. Eboshi (about 48 m) → Mt. Maeogochi (about 46 m) → Mt. Ogochi (about 35 m). It is about 5 hours 15 minutes from the Torikura trailhead to Mt. Ogochi, usually a one-night, two-day trip with a night at the Sanpukutoge hut. Staying at Sanpuku Pass, you can do Mt. Ogochi out-and-back with a light pack.
Huts: at Sanpuku Pass the Sanpukutoge hut (about 2,580 m, reservations only, booking tel 0265-39-3110, with a campsite). Just below the summit of Mt. Ogochi, on the east side, is the Ogochi emergency hut, which is staffed during part of the summer season (check for meals and bedding) and otherwise usable as an unstaffed emergency shelter. As it is small, plan ahead in the busy season.
Mt. Eboshi and Mt. Maeogochi: from Sanpuku Pass the climb to Mt. Eboshi (about 2,726 m) is a fine viewpoint. From Mt. Eboshi to Mt. Maeogochi and Mt. Ogochi the ridge runs through creeping pine and flower meadows, with views of Mt. Shiomi, the Arakawa Three Peaks and Mt. Fuji. There are ups and downs, and the ridge is exposed in strong wind or lightning, so take care.
Ogochi emergency hut: just below the summit, it is a 360-degree viewpoint. The dawn views of Mt. Shiomi and Mt. Fuji are a highlight. Take on water on the Sanpuku Pass side and check in advance whether the hut has a water source.
Season and gear: the season is mid-July to September. In the snow and frozen seasons full gear and experience are needed. Carry rain gear, warm clothing, a helmet, a headlamp and plenty of water.
In an emergency: call 110 (police) or 119 (fire/rescue).
