Mt. Hansamine (半作嶺, 894 m) in Tanabe, Wakayama, is a peak of the Oto Mountains and one of the 100 Famous Kansai Mountains.
A small mountain stringing together sharp rocky peaks on a ridge running from the Hansa Pass, it has steep rope-aided climbs and athletic rock crests near the summit, and is known for a rock called the “Goddess’s Profile” that looks like a human face seen from the side. Low though it is, the route is varied, and from the summit you look out to the main ridge of the Omine Mountains. A traverse linking it with neighbouring Mt. Mitsumori is also popular. Public transport is sparse; you reach the Hansa Pass trailhead by taxi or private car from JR Kii-Tanabe Station.

The trailhead is the Hansa Pass on a forest road in the mountains of Tanabe, with parking for a few cars just before the pass. The out-and-back of Mt. Hansamine from here is about 1 hour 50 minutes, about 2.4 km and about 270 m of gain — short, but with rope-aided steep climbs once you reach the ridge, a varied path. From the Hansa Pass, the ridge in the opposite direction leads to Mt. Mitsumori, and a long route on to Mt. Hyakken can be put together.
There is no staffed hut or water, so it is a day hike. There are rock crests and rope sections, slippery after rain, so take care. The forest road from the village to the trailhead is steep and narrow, needing care in snow or bad weather. The season is fresh green to early summer (May) and autumn colour (November). Check the latest forest-road conditions with Tanabe City.

Access to the trailhead

  1. [Outbound / Return] Kii-Tanabe Station ⇄ Hansa Pass (trailhead, taxi / car)

1. [Outbound / Return] Kii-Tanabe Station ⇄ Hansa Pass (trailhead, taxi / car)

The base is JR Kinokuni Line (Kisei Main Line) Kii-Tanabe Station, but there is no bus to the Hansa Pass trailhead, so you use a taxi or a private car from the station. It is a fair distance from Kii-Tanabe Station to the Hansa Pass, so a taxi is a long ride and needs booking; confirm the fare and the pickup in advance. It is also reassuring to book a pickup to match your descent time.

① Mind the forest road: the forest road from the village to the trailhead is steep and narrow, so take care passing oncoming vehicles. In snow or after rain there is a risk of slipping and rockfall, so do not push it.
② By car: there is parking for a few cars just before the Hansa Pass (when full, park on the shoulder). From the Wakayama side, go via the Hanwa and Kisei expressways.
③ Inquiries: check the forest-road conditions and the latest trail information with Tanabe City (tourism / forestry section).

Route and safety notes

Route: the basic route is an out-and-back of Mt. Hansamine along the ridge from the Hansa Pass (trailhead), about 1 hour 50 minutes, about 2.4 km, about 270 m of gain. Short, but near the summit there are rope-aided steep climbs. From the Hansa Pass, the ridge on the other side leads to Mt. Mitsumori, and a long traverse on to Mt. Hyakken can be put together.

Rock crests and rope sections: the path over the sharp rocky peaks has rope sections and narrow crests, so watch for falls. Wet rock after rain is especially slippery; pass carefully with three points of contact.

The Goddess’s Profile: on the ridge is a rock called the “Goddess’s Profile,” which looks like a human face from the side — a signature of Mt. Hansamine. From the viewpoints you look out to the main ridge of the Omine Mountains.

Access and forest road: there is no public transport, so it is taxi or private car from Kii-Tanabe Station. The forest road from the village to the trailhead is steep and narrow, so mind your driving and any closures.

Season and gear: as there is no staffed hut or water, bring drinking water. The season is the fresh green of May and the autumn colour of November. Carry a map and compass (GPS), rain gear and a headlamp, and even on a low mountain watch for losing the trail and for sunset.

In an emergency: call 110 (police) or 119 (fire/rescue). Always file a climbing plan.
