Mt. Miwa (三輪山, 467 m), a conical mountain in Sakurai, Nara, is the sacred body-mountain (goshintai) of Omiwa Shrine, one of the oldest shrines in Japan. It is one of the 100 Famous Kansai Mountains.
The mountain itself has been revered as a deity since ancient times, with every tree and blade of grass believed to house a god, and entry has been strictly limited. It is not hiked but climbed as an act of worship — “tohai” — after registering at the Sai Shrine. Photography and eating are forbidden on the mountain, and what you see and hear there must not be disclosed. By public transport you walk from JR Miwa Station to the worship reception at the Sai Shrine.

The base is the worship reception at the Sai Shrine (Sai-jinja, an auxiliary shrine of Omiwa, about 120 m), where you register your name and address, receive a sash (the proof of Miwa-yama worship) and enter the mountain. The round trip to the Okitsu-iwakura sacred rock at the summit takes about 2 hours. Reception is from 9:00 to noon, and you must report your descent to the Sai Shrine office by 15:00.
The climb is an act of worship, not hiking or leisure. As there are steep, slippery sections, wear sturdy shoes and bring rain gear and water, and do not stray from the set path. Some days are closed to worship for rituals, so check in advance with Omiwa Shrine (tel 0744-42-6633). It can be done year-round, but worship is often suspended in summer (August).

How to access the trailhead

  1. [Round trip] Miwa Station ⇄ Sai Shrine (on foot)

1. [Round trip] Miwa Station ⇄ Sai Shrine (on foot)

You reach the worship reception, the Sai Shrine, on foot from Miwa Station on the JR Sakurai Line (Man’yo Mahoroba Line). It is about 5 minutes from Miwa Station to the second torii of Omiwa Shrine, and about 15 minutes through the approach and Omiwa Shrine to the worship reception at the Sai Shrine. Miwa Station is about 30 minutes from Nara Station on the JR Sakurai Line; from the Osaka direction, come via Sakurai from Tennoji or Tsuruhashi. Plan to arrive at Miwa Station early in the morning so as to be in time for reception (which ends at noon). Afterwards, return along the same approach to Miwa Station.

Parking: there is parking for worshippers around Omiwa Shrine and the Sai Shrine. Note: around Miwa Station is a shrine-gate town lined with souvenir shops and Miwa-somen noodle restaurants, worth a visit alongside your worship. Check the latest train times with JR West.

Worship of Mt. Miwa and the rules (a sacred body-mountain)

Reception: worship is registered at the worship reception of the Sai Shrine. You sign your name and address, pay a worship offering of 300 yen, receive a sash (the proof of Miwa-yama worship) and enter the mountain. Reception is from 9:00 to noon, and you must report your descent to the Sai Shrine office by 15:00. The round trip to the summit takes about 2 hours.

Days closed to worship (2026): January 1–8, February 17, April 9 and 18, August 1–31, October 24 and November 23. These may change for rituals or for the protection of the mountain, so always check in advance with Omiwa Shrine (tel 0744-42-6633).

What to observe on the mountain: Mt. Miwa is an object of faith. Photography is forbidden on the mountain, as is eating (only water for hydration is allowed). Keep conversation to a minimum and avoid loud voices and singing. Do not disclose what you see and hear there. Do not stray from the set worship path, and do not take away plants or stones.

Condition and gear: do not enter if you are unwell. The worship path is steep and slippery in places over roots and rock, so wear sturdy shoes and bring rain gear and water. Mt. Miwa is also known as the deity of Miwa-somen noodles and of sake brewing; the Omiwa and Sai shrines at its foot (and the sacred water of the Kusuri-ido well) are worth visiting too.

In an emergency: call 110 (police) or 119 (fire/rescue).
