Mt. Ichigaoyama (540 m) is in Tango-cho, Kyotango City, Kyoto Prefecture, and is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai.
It is an independent peak at the northern tip of the Tango Peninsula, prized for the sweeping view from the summit over the Sea of Japan and the Tango coastline, reaching the mountains of Wakasa on a clear day. Though low, its form rising straight from the sea is striking, and it has long been an object of worship. It is only about 40 minutes from the trailhead to the summit, so it can be climbed in half a day.
For public transport, you take a Tankai bus from Mineyama Station or Amino Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway to Shimizu at the foot, then walk to the trailhead.

The trailhead is the end of the forest road beyond the Shimizu hamlet (with parking for a few cars). From the Shimizu bus stop to the trailhead is about 30 minutes on foot via Yahata, and from the trailhead to the summit is about 40 minutes up a zigzag path. Just below the summit is a collapsed torii gate, and distance markers stand along the trail. The round trip from Shimizu via the trailhead to the summit is a day hike of roughly 2–3 hours including breaks.
It is a low mountain, but buses on the Tango Peninsula are infrequent, so always check the bus times in advance. There is no water source or shop on the mountain, so prepare water and snacks near Mineyama or Amino Station, or at Shimizu. The climbing season is year-round, but watch for heat and insects in summer and snow and ice in winter.

How to access the trailhead

  1. [Outbound] Mineyama / Amino Station → Shimizu → trailhead
  2. [Return] trailhead → Shimizu → Mineyama / Amino Station

1. [Outbound] Mineyama / Amino Station → Shimizu → trailhead

The base is Mineyama Station or Amino Station on the Kyoto Tango Railway Miyazu-Toyooka Line. From in front of the station, take a Tankai bus (Tango Kairiku Kotsu) bound for the Kyogamisaki direction (the Tango-Mineyama Line, Coast Line, etc.) and get off at Shimizu in Tango-cho.

Travel time: about 35 minutes from Mineyama Station / about 27 minutes from Amino Station
Service: local buses toward Kyogamisaki (infrequent, differing on weekdays vs. weekends)

Buses on the Tango Peninsula are limited. Always confirm in advance, on the official Tankai bus timetable, which Kyogamisaki-bound buses stop at Shimizu. From the Shimizu bus stop to the trailhead (the end of the forest road) is about 30 minutes on foot via Yahata. By car, there is parking for a few vehicles at the trailhead.

2. [Return] trailhead → Shimizu → Mineyama / Amino Station

After your descent, walk about 30 minutes back from the trailhead to Shimizu, and from the Shimizu bus stop take a Tankai bus bound for Mineyama or Amino Station.

Travel time: about 35 minutes from Shimizu to Mineyama Station / about 27 minutes to Amino Station
Service: local buses toward Mineyama / Amino Station (infrequent, differing on weekdays vs. weekends)

To avoid missing the last bus, always check the return times before you set off. Because service is infrequent, plan with plenty of margin around the outbound and return times.

Climbing route and safety notes

Route: the round trip Shimizu (bus stop) → Yahata → trailhead (end of the forest road) → zigzag path → Mt. Ichigaoyama summit (540 m). It is about 30 minutes on foot from Shimizu to the trailhead and about 40 minutes from the trailhead to the summit, making a day hike of roughly 2–3 hours including breaks. Below the summit is a collapsed torii gate, and distance markers to the top stand along the trail. From the summit you get a full view of the Sea of Japan and the Tango coastline.

Low-mountain notes: Although a low 540 m peak, the trail climbs a steep zigzag slope that is slippery after rain, so wear sturdy shoes. Watch for heat and insects (ticks, hornets, etc.) in summer and snow and ice in winter. The weather near the sea changes quickly, so carry rain gear.

Water, facilities, season: There is no water source, shop, or toilet on the mountain. Prepare water and snacks near Mineyama or Amino Station, or at Shimizu. The climbing season is year-round, but an early start is best in midsummer. Buses on the Tango Peninsula are infrequent, so plan around the outbound and return times.

Gear and emergencies: Carry sturdy shoes, rain gear, drinks, a hat, and insect repellent. In an emergency call 110 (police) or 119 (fire/rescue).
