Mount Hakuba-Asahi (Asahidake, 2,867 m) rises on the border of Toyama and Nagano in the northern North Alps (Ushiro-Tateyama range). One of Japan’s 100 Highest Mountains, it is a satellite peak nestled just west of Mount Shirouma (Shiroumadake). Seen from Mount Asahi or Mount Yukikura to the north, its sharp helmet-like shape can be mistaken for Mount Shirouma itself. Lying off the main traverse route, it draws few people — a quiet viewpoint with Mount Shirouma close at hand.

⚠ Mount Hakuba-Asahi is a dashed (difficult) route / the Hakuba Great Snow Gully is closed (2026 season)

  • There is no trail straight up Mount Hakuba-Asahi. You climb the Mount Shirouma trail to the ridge (near the Hakuba-sanso and Hakuba-dake Chojo-shukusha huts), then walk out and back from the Asahidake junction. From the junction to the summit the route is a dashed (faint) trail on the topo map over scree and creeping-pine where the path is hard to follow. In the late-snow season a snowfield remains, so front-point crampons, an ice axe and other snow gear are essential.
  • The Hakuba Great Snow Gully (Daisekkei) route has been closed since September 29, 2025, and whether it will open in summer 2026 is undecided. When it is closed, the alternative is the traverse via Tsugaike Kogen → Tsugaike Panorama Way → Hakuba-oike → Mount Shirouma. Check the latest information with Hakuba-kan and the Otari Village Tourism Association.
  • The Alpico “Sarukura line” bus (Hakuba Station – Sarukura) has been reservation-only since 2025 (book in advance via Hassha-Orai-Net). It runs roughly mid-July to mid-October.
Mount Hakuba-Asahi shares its trailhead (Sarukura) and trail with Mount Shirouma. For full access to Sarukura, the Great Snow Gully and the Shirouma three-peak traverse, see the Mount Shirouma page.

3. Climbing route, the crux and estimated trail times of Mount Hakuba-Asahi

Mount Hakuba-Asahi is climbed together with Mount Shirouma, starting from Sarukura. From Sarukura you pass Hakuba-jiri and climb the Hakuba Great Snow Gully to the Hakuba-sanso and Hakuba-dake Chojo-shukusha huts on the ridge. Entering the trail that runs from Mount Shirouma toward Mount Shimizu (Sobadani Onsen), you reach Mount Hakuba-Asahi by walking out and back from the Asahidake junction.

● Standard route (Great Snow Gully → Hakuba-sanso → out-and-back to Asahidake)
Sarukura → (Hakuba-jiri, Hakuba Great Snow Gully) → Hakuba-sanso → (Hakuba-dake Chojo-shukusha, Asahidake junction) → Mount Hakuba-Asahi. The crux is the dashed stretch from the junction to the summit, where the path blends into scree and creeping-pine and is easy to lose in fog. A snowfield lingers in the col with Mount Shirouma, and glacial landforms can be seen at the head of the Yanamata valley to the north.

Standard trail times for the main sections (summer / snow-free guide)

  • Sarukura → Hakuba-jiri → Hakuba Great Snow Gully → Hakuba-sanso: approx. 6 hours (ascent, elevation gain approx. 1,600 m)
  • Hakuba-sanso → Asahidake junction → Mount Hakuba-Asahi (out and back): approx. 2 hours (the junction-to-summit dashed section is about 45 min one way over scree)
Mount Hakuba-Asahi sits on a ridge above the tree line with no escape routes. Plan with ample time and always carry warm clothing and rain gear against afternoon thunderstorms, strong wind and low temperatures. The dashed section is faint and easy to lose in fog, so check your position with map and GPS. In the late-snow season (June – mid-July) a snowfield remains, so front-point crampons, an ice axe and sunglasses are essential.

The view
The summit of Mount Hakuba-Asahi lies directly west of Mount Shirouma and is a superb viewpoint of the great bulk of Mount Shirouma close at hand. On clear days you can see toward Mount Tsurugi and Mount Tate, the Kekachi three peaks, the Toyama Plain and even the Japan Sea — a grand panorama from a quiet summit with few people.

Recommended plan (1 night / 2 days, combined with Mount Shirouma)

  • Day 1: Morning bus from Hakuba Station to Sarukura → climb the Great Snow Gully to Hakuba-sanso (overnight)
  • Day 2: Hakuba-sanso → Asahidake junction → out-and-back to Mount Hakuba-Asahi → take in Mount Shirouma, descend the Great Snow Gully to Sarukura → Hakuba Station

Even if Mount Hakuba-Asahi is your sole objective, staying the night before at the Hakuba-sanso or Hakuba-dake Chojo-shukusha hut and doing it as an out-and-back is the safe choice. A day trip is impossible; assume one night on the mountain.
