Mt. Ōtōzan

Mt. Ōtōzan (大塔山, 1,122 m) is a mountain on the border of Tanabe and Kozagawa in Wakayama Prefecture, and one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai. The highest peak of the Ōtō range, it is a deep mountain of the southern Kii Peninsula, the source of the Kumano, Koza and Hiki rivers. Around the summit spreads the southern limit of beech forest on Honshū, with primeval nature. The path becomes faint beyond the headwaters, with slippery steep slopes and land leeches, making it an advanced mountain that demands map-reading and experience.
There is no public transport to the trailheads (Tamamatsu-One and Tōbedani-deai on the Komori-Somadani forest road), so access is by car or taxi.

Mt. Ōtōzan is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai. There is no bus to the trailhead, which sits at the end of a forest road deep in the Kii Peninsula, so a car or taxi is assumed. It is an advanced route with faint paths, requiring full gear and experience.

The base is Kii-Tanabe Station on the JR Kinokuni Line (Kisei Main Line). There is no bus to the Tamamatsu-One / Tōbedani-deai trailheads (Komori-Somadani forest road), so a car or taxi is assumed. By car, from the Kamitonda IC on the Kisei Expressway take national routes 42 and 311, prefectural roads 36 and 37, and national route 371 to the Komori-Somadani forest road. The forest road is narrow and prone to rockfall and closures, so check road conditions in advance.

2. [Climb] Trailhead → Ōtōzan (Tamamatsu ridge / Tōbedani-deai)

The classic options are the Tamamatsu ridge route and the route up the Koza headwaters from Tōbedani-deai. Beech forest at its Honshū southern limit spreads around the summit, and it is about 2–3 hours one way (4–6 hours round trip). Beyond the headwaters the path is faint with slippery steep slopes — an advanced course where a topo map, GPS and route-finding are essential. Low as it looks, it is a deep inland Kii mountain with difficult escape; guard against land leeches (spring–autumn) and start early with time to spare.

3. [Return] Descent → station

Descend the way you came to the forest-road parking. With a long day and a long forest road, plan to be down before dark, drive back toward Kii-Tanabe / Kamitonda, and return toward Wakayama and Shin-Ōsaka on the JR Kinokuni Line. If using a taxi, book it in advance for your descent time (a long trip, so arrange ahead).

Day-trip plan (advanced, experienced only): Kii-Tanabe / Kamitonda → (car) Komori-Somadani forest road trailhead → Tamamatsu ridge → Ōtōzan → return (about 4–6 hours) → forest road → (car) station. The beech forest is lovely in fresh green and autumn foliage.
Planning points: carry a topo map, GPS, leech protection and spare food; start early with margin, check whether the forest road is open, and be ready to turn back.
