Mt. Hoshiyama
More figures and data sources
Mt. Hoshiyama (法師山, 1,120 m) is a mountain in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, and one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai. Set deep in the Otō range in the southern Kii Mountains, it is a quiet summit wrapped in beech and natural forest. It is also known for the traverse linking neighbouring Mt. Hansamine, and the summit looks out over Mt. Otō and the Hatenashi range.
The trailhead is Sōgoyabashi along the Yasukawa forest road; with no public transport, access is realistic by private car or taxi.
Mt. Hoshiyama is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai. The trailhead is Sōgoyabashi along the Yasukawa forest road; by car, turn off Route 371 at Tomisato / Shimokawashimo toward Yasukawa and follow the forest road to the bridge. The Hoshiyama trailhead is at the foot of Sōgoyabashi; cross the suspension bridge onto the ridge and climb about 1 hour 20 minutes to the summit. The full out-and-back or loop is about 5 hours 30 minutes. Public transport is not suited to this route, so a private car or a taxi (from the Kii-Tanabe area) is realistic.

1. [Outbound] Kii-Tanabe → Sōgoyabashi trailhead (car / taxi) → Hoshiyama
The start is the Sōgoyabashi trailhead along the Yasukawa forest road. By car, turn off Route 371 at Tomisato / Shimokawashimo toward Yasukawa and follow the forest road to Sōgoyabashi. The trailhead is at the foot of the bridge; cross the suspension bridge onto the ridge (note that the bridge is hidden from the trailhead sign) and climb the natural-forest ridge for about 1 hour 20 minutes to the summit of Hoshiyama. The summit is ringed by beech forest, with views of Mt. Otō and the Hatenashi range. The forest road is narrow with rockfall, so drive carefully.
There is no public transport to the Hoshiyama trailhead (Sōgoyabashi). A private car is most realistic, turning off Route 371 at Tomisato / Shimokawashimo onto the Yasukawa forest road. A taxi would be a long charter from the Kii-Tanabe area (e.g. Meiko Taxi Tanabe 0739-22-2300; book ahead and confirm the fare, as the distance is long). The forest road is narrow and can be closed by rockfall or landslides, so check the latest local information with Tanabe City before setting out.

2. [Return] Hoshiyama → Sōgoyabashi trailhead → Kii-Tanabe
To descend, retrace the ridge to the Sōgoyabashi trailhead (a traverse to neighbouring Mt. Hansamine is another option). Afterwards, return toward Kii-Tanabe by car or taxi. As the forest-road section is long, plan with enough margin to descend before dark. Water sources and shops are scarce on the mountain, so prepare ample food and water in advance.

3. Recommended plan & area info
Out-and-back plan: Sōgoyabashi trailhead → Hoshiyama (about 3 to 3.5 hours round trip). For the fit, the traverse linking neighbouring Mt. Hansamine (about 5 hours 30 minutes in all) is also popular.
Best season: fresh greenery (May) and autumn colour (November) are ideal, with beautiful beech and natural forest. Despite its height, this is the southern Kii Peninsula, so winter snow varies year to year — check in advance.
● Views: from around the summit, the southern Kii Mountains including Mt. Otō and the Hatenashi range.
● Water: few clear water sources on the trail; prepare drinks in advance.
● Toilets: none at the trailhead; use facilities in central Tanabe beforehand.
● Forest road: the Yasukawa forest road is narrow with risk of rockfall and landslides — check whether it is passable in advance.
● Nature: a quiet mountain wrapped in beech and natural forest; also a traverse to Mt. Hansamine.
● Emergency: Tanabe Police 0739-23-0110 / Tanabe City Office 0739-22-5300.
