Mt. Hyakuri

Mt. Hyakuri (百里ヶ岳, Hyakurigadake, 931 m) is a mountain on the border of Takashima in Shiga Prefecture and Obama in Fukui Prefecture, and one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai. Part of the Tanba Highland, the prefectural-border ridge over its summit forms part of the Takashima Trail. Its name is said to come from being able to “see a hundred ri in every direction,” and the appeal is ridge walking through beech forest with fine views. On the south side, the Negorozaka was a pass on the “Saba Kaidō” (Mackerel Road) that carried Wakasa’s fish to Kyoto.
There is little public transport directly to the trailheads at Onyū Pass or Negoro Pass, so access is basically by car or taxi.

Mt. Hyakuri is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai. The most common route is the ridge course from Onyū Pass (Onyū-tōge) on the Shiga side, a popular traverse over the summit and down to Kijiyama. From the Fukui side, a forest road leads by car up to Negoro Pass, with a shorter out-and-back to the summit from Negorozaka. Neither trailhead has convenient bus service, so car or taxi is the realistic option.

Mt. Hyakuri lies on a deep prefectural border with no route bus directly to the trailheads. By public transport you would take a Kojak (Kōjaku) bus from Adogawa Station on the JR Kosei Line toward Kutsuki, then transfer to a Takashima community bus toward Onyūdani — but services are very few and transfers many, so car or taxi is the realistic choice. On the Shiga side there is parking at Onyū Pass; on the Fukui side a forest road climbs by car to Negoro Pass.

2. [Hike] Onyū Pass → Mt. Hyakuri summit → Kijiyama (traverse)

From Onyū Pass on the Shiga side, go via Shichigure Pass to the prefectural-border ridge (the Takashima Trail). Past the Negorozaka-tōge junction, follow the beech-forest ridge to the summit of Mt. Hyakuri (931 m). The traverse continues over Kijiyama Pass and down to the Kijiyama bus stop: the Onyū Pass–summit–Kijiyama course takes about 6 hours 40 minutes. It is a long intermediate route with views and fine beech woods along the ridge. Depending on your fitness, you can shorten it to an out-and-back to the summit.

3. [Alternative] Out-and-back from Negoro Pass (shorter)

For a shorter climb, drive the forest road on the Fukui side up to Negoro Pass and make an out-and-back to Mt. Hyakuri along the border ridge from Negorozaka on the Saba Kaidō. Starting from the high pass means little elevation gain, and you can easily enjoy the beech forest and the atmosphere of the historic road. The forest road is narrow with some rockfall, so take care driving and parking. Return to the trailhead you started from.

4. Recommended plans & area info

Traverse plan: Onyū Pass → Shichigure Pass → Mt. Hyakuri summit → Kijiyama Pass → Kijiyama (about 6 hours 40 minutes), for fit hikers enjoying the Takashima Trail ridge and beech forest.
Easy plan: drive to Negoro Pass → Negorozaka → out-and-back to the summit, enjoying the history of the Saba Kaidō and the beech woods in a short time. The area is especially beautiful in fresh green and autumn foliage.
