Mt. Amagatake

Mt. Amagatake (尼ヶ岳, 957.4 m) is a mountain on the border of Misugi, Tsu City and Iga in Mie Prefecture, and one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai. A shapely independent peak called “Iga Fuji”, it has few trees above the mid-slope, so the summit gives a sweeping view of the Iga basin, Ise Bay and the Daikō mountains. Within the Murō-Akame-Aoyama Quasi-National Park, it is also popular as a traverse from neighbouring Mt. Ōborayama just to the south.
The nearest stations are Nabari and Aoyamachō on the Kintetsu Osaka Line; the trailheads (Tarō / Takao) are reached by bus or taxi.

Mt. Amagatake is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Kansai. Access is by Mie Kotsu bus (toward Okitsu / Shikitsu) from Kintetsu Nabari Station to the Tarō area (Shimo-Tarō), or from Kintetsu Aoyamachō Station to the Takao trailhead. As services are limited and the trailheads are far, combining with a taxi or car, or a traverse from Mt. Ōborayama, is realistic.

There are two main public-transport options. ① From Kintetsu Nabari Station, take a Mie Kotsu bus (31/33, toward Okitsu / Shikitsu) to “Shimo-Tarō” and climb from the Tarō-area trailhead. ② From Kintetsu Aoyamachō Station, head for the trailhead in the Takao area. As buses are infrequent and the trailheads are some distance away, combining with a taxi or car is realistic. Many also climb it as a traverse from Mt. Ōborayama (Skyland Ōbora) just to the south.

2. [Climb] Tarō / Takao → Amagatake (or a traverse from Ōborayama)

From the Tarō area there are routes via the Kurahone-tōge pass and the west ridge; from the Iga side there is the Takao trailhead route. As an independent peak, the final stretch to the summit is steep, but the top opens to a 360-degree view. A typical day trip is about 3–4 hours round trip from each trailhead. Most popular is the traverse from Mt. Ōborayama, linking Skyland Ōbora – Sakura-tōge – Amagatake to enjoy both peaks in a day. The grassy slopes above the mid-mountain give fine views but little shade, so guard against the summer sun.

3. [Return] Descent → station

Descend to the trailhead you started from and take a bus or taxi to Nabari or Aoyamachō Station. Buses are few and the last service is early, so check a service that fits your descent time in advance, and book a taxi if there is none. From the stations, return toward Osaka (Tsuruhashi / Ōsaka-Uehommachi) and Nagoya on the Kintetsu Osaka Line.

4. Recommended plans & area info

Traverse plan (recommended): Ise-Okitsu / Nabari area → Skyland Ōbora (Ōborayama) → Sakura-tōge → Amagatake → descent (about 4–6 hours). Two peaks — Ōborayama and Amagatake — in one day.
Out-and-back plan: Tarō or Takao trailhead → Amagatake → return (about 3–4 hours).
Note: with few buses, plan carefully. The final climb is steep, and the grassy slopes are exposed to the summer sun.
